Such, too, were the Moors, of whose poetry the Spanish is but a fainter echo. While cases like these are exceptional, every people, however humble or obscure, who are bound to gether by a common tongue (though it be but a patoz's), a common origin, and common interests, can boast of a poet among themselves who has sung their local ballads and traditions, and thrown a halo of poetry round the simple pleasures and sorrows, fears and aspirations, that make up the drama of their life. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from The Poetry of Other Lands: A Collection of Translations Into English Verse of the Poetry of Other Languages, Ancient and Modern His work does not claim to be an encyclopaedia of all the poetry of other countries that has been trans lated into English verse, but is a collection of those minor and lyrical poems that seemed to the compiler, after an examination of all the works on the subject accessible to him, as worthy of being better known to English-speaking people than they ever would become lying hid in obscure corners and amid much rubbish. Some of the translations are so well known that they have almost become incor porated into English poetry, but by far the greater number have never been read by, nor are even known by name to, many of the persons who will meet with this collection; and the compiler hopes that the work may prove to be a valuable companion volume to any one of the encyclopaedias of English poetry that are now published. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Poetry. Environmental Studies. THE UPLANDS: BOOK OF THE COUREL AND OTHER POEMS by the great Galician poet Uxío Novoneyra, translated by Erín Moure. Novoneyra is a poet and man of the land, and stands with Lorca as a poetic visionary of 20th century Spain. He was devoted to his region, the mountainous Courel, to its variant of Galician and to its names and ways, as well as to Galician culture as a whole, to the expression of all minority cultures and to freedom from imperialism, war, and economic expansionism. His oeuvre--rich in sound, syllable, silence and gesture--reveals him as an eco-poet before the concept existed. Os Eidos [THE UPLANDS], first published in 1955 and still in print today, is his monumental work.

The scheme of the Victorian Poets included, besides an extended review of acknowledged leaders, a concise analysis of groups forming the general choir of the period represented. The work thus became somewhat complete in scope, and doubtless has served as a critical handbook and means of reference. This incidental result, however, was quite subordinate to the author's main design; and I think that such a fact was evident not only to a professional class, but to all readers interested concerning the spirit and methods of poetry, - especially of our English song. To that design I wish shortly to refer, as it is the chief motive of the present volume also. But first I would reproduce a statement made in the Preface to the former work, viz., that the author originally had under taken to write upon the poets of this country and the causes of their successes and failures; that on examina tion he had found modern and radical changes in the conditions affecting ideal effort, at home and abroad.
