Excerpt from The Place-Names of Argyll This seems to me a valuable book, and I am glad the London Argyllshire Association has encouraged the author in what must have been a really hard work. It must be Of interest to all branches Of the Celtic-speaking people, not only to all the Highlands and all Scotland as well as to Argyll, but to Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany, where the Old language is retained, if not always as a spoken tongue, yet always in their own Old names from the same or a kindred origin. It may be of interest to even those outside the Celtic circle to learn how much of true and important history lies dormant in the place-names Of a country. Argyll is exceptionally complex in its history and therefore very rich in its names, and I am not surprised that the author found many of them to be difficult to explain, and some even impossible. The several layers Of names left by succeeding races come out very clearly. There are the bottom names Of the pre-celtic race, variously named Iberian, Pictish, and otherwise. These must be difficult to explain, perhaps they never can be explained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Place Names of Stirlingshire The first edition of this little book was very limited, and was all sold out within six weeks. The writer is grateful for the very kindly and appreciative way in which it was received both by the press as a whole, and by private readers. But the first edition had many imperfections, and the writer is glad to have the Opportunity of presenting his work in this much enlarged and improved form. The Introduction has been carefully revised, but the chief alterations and additions will be found in the appended List of Names. In its revision the writer has drawn largely from the Valuation Roll, and has enjoyed the skilled assistance of Mr. John Cameron, of Ullapool, a Gaelic scholar of repute, who has helped him to adjust not a few grammatical nice ties, which vexed the righteous soul of the scholarly Gael; but for all Opinions expressed in this book the writer alone is responsible. It should also be understood that sometimes, of set purpose, he has not spelt Gaelic names as they would be spelt to-day, because it seemed evident that, in some cases, things have changed in the 500 or 600 years which have passed since Gaelic ceased to be spoken in the most of Stirlingshire. Excerpt from Place, Names, Highlands Islands of Scotland Dr Alexander Macbain's work on Names of Places deals with the Celtic names of pre-Gaelic origin which he calls "Pictish"; with Gaelic names, and with names of Norse origin which have been transmitted through Gaelic. The area from which he took his materials was chiefly Inverness-shire, Sutherland, and Lewis. His views on the language spoken by the Picts are given in his paper on "Ptolemy's Geography of Scotland" (published separately), in his edition of Skene's "Highlanders of Scotland," and in several papers contained in this volume, particularly that on the "Place-Names of Invernessshire." His position is that the Picts spoke Early British or a dialect of it, and that the Celtic language of early Britain was practically homogeneous from the English Channel to the very North. He agrees with Kuno Meyer in holding that "no Gael ever set his foot on British soil save from a vessel that had put out from Ireland." Excerpt from The Place Names of West Aberdeenshire As editor, besides putting together the latter part of the work, I have only corrected clerical errors, and inserted references which had been left blank. A few explanations which the author had marked as doubtful, or which appeared to be incomplete, have been omitted. While the text of the work is Mr. Macdonald's both in substance and in form, it is necessarily much less complete than it would have been had he lived to publish it. In his hands it would have undergone repeated revisions - he never spared himself labour - in which many imperfections would have disappeared, and not a few blanks would have been filled up. It will be seen, for instance, that the number of words of which no explanation is offered (other than Saxon place-names whose meaning is self evident) is considerable, especially in the latter part of the work. For some of these no explanation would in any case have been given: Mr. Macdonald held strongly that there are many names in the district covered by his work whose original form is so completely lost as to put their meaning beyond the reach of reasonable conjecture: but others of them he was still investigating at the time of his death, and it may be taken as certain that in some cases he would have arrived at conclusions which he would have embodied in the work. For the deficiencies, whatever they may be, in the author's work, his death in the midst of his labours must be sufficient apology. For those faults which may be attributable to the editor, he can only plead that the work was not of his own choosing; and that the disqualifications to which those faults may be due have had at least the advantage of freeing him from the temptation, to which a student of place-names would have been exposed, of introducing into the work of another his own emendations and suggestions. If on the other hand the minor errors in the book should prove to be few, this is due chiefly to Professor Mackinnon's careful revision. Excerpt from The House of Argyll and the Collateral Branches of the Clan Campbell: From the Year 420 to the Present Time In presenting this volume to the public, the Editor feels that very little need be said by him by way of preface. The House of Argyll, as the head of the Clan Campbell, holds such a prominent place in our national history, its records are so intimately blended with every struggle for religious and political freedom, the actions of its chiefs have shed such lustre on our annals, that any fresh fact connected with their history cannot fail to be acceptable to the public. Most of the matter herein contained has never before been published. Of the extracts from the Argyll papers in the Appendix, there were only fifty copies printed, while the body of the work is taken from some old manuscripts, long in the possession of the family of Archibald MacNab, Esq. of Penmore, Isle of Mull; these, as well as the ancient family tree of the Craignish Campbells, he has most kindly placed at our disposal. We have collated and compared these old documents with other authentic records to substantiate their facts and verify their dates, but the language of the writers we have left untouched. We are well aware that a few Gaelic scholars would, in some instances, have used other words, but we have adhered to the MSS.
