Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, Vol. 13: 1918 Recent developments in water analysis have emphasized the importance of making examinations at the source whenever possible. The work Of the Bureau of Science has Shown the need of field investigations and the peculiar applicability Of field methods to Philippine conditions. Accordingly field work has been made one of the most important features of our study of water supplies. Owing to the comparative isolation of the Philippines, the great distance from scientific or manufacturing centers, and the consequent loss of time when apparatus and supplies are pro cured from abroad, we have found it necessary, to a large extent, to build our own apparatus, to prepare our own reagents for field use, and to devise and adapt methods suitable to our needs. The field work of the Bureau Of Science has been carried on for three years. Because of the importance of field methods at the present time, and because workers in as isolated places as the Philippines will continue to be dependent, in a great measure, on their own resources, we have thought it advisable to describe our field methods and apparatus in detail. Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1918, Vol. 13: Section B, Tropical Medicine A curious difference was Observed ih' the tendency to develop ment of ova in the two types. In 3 out Of 5 cages and in per cent of the total number dissected type Giles showed ova well advanced in development, Often as early as the sixth day after feeding, while well-developed ova never appeared in type inde finitus. In 4, at least, Of the 5 pairs males were included with the females in cages. Some further Observations on these two types and on other types Of rossi will be made in connection with certain tables and in the summary at the close Of this paper. From the compara tive Observations on the two types there seems to be substantial evidence for regarding them as distinct forms, biologically and morphologically as well, even though they may not be distinguish able ih the adult stage. Further the question may be raised whether type Giles of Malaya may not be a different form from A. Rossi Giles Of India. III View Of the great variability Of the Malayan type, its restricted breeding places, and its suscepti bility to infection with malarial parasites, it may be at least a biological variant, its characteristics dependent in some measure on its topographical environment.
