The interest aroused by the lectures, and the appreciation expressed, seemed to warrant their appearance in the present form; but a few words of explanation are necessary. These chapters are addressed not only to those who are professional teachers, but to the wider public of those whose business in life calls them to share in the teaching of the young. It is now between one-sixth and one-fifth larger than it was in the fourth edition. The additions include some chapters which are wholly new, namely, i., xv., xvi., xvii. And xx. Other chapters - more particularly, iv., vi., vii., viii., ix., x., xii., xiii., xiv., xviii. And xix. - have undergone so much alteration as to be largely new. In making these changes I have sought, while keeping to the original form and mode of treatment of the book, as well as to its original intention - as an introduction to psychology - to make it more adequately representative of the present state of psychology and of educational thought. As a result of the changes the work will be found somewhat more advanced in parts. Any difficulties thus introduced, however, may be considerably lessened by a study of the book under the guidance of a competent lecturer, who may probably advise the student to omit certain portions on a first reading: e.g., on the theory of Development, and on Perception. Excerpt from Psychology for Teachers On the comments of another critic I may be allowed to say a few words, since they may serve to elucidate my point of View. The child when he comes under the discipline of the teacher, even in the kindergarten, has already reached a certain level of mental develop ment; he has gained some experience; he behaves in more or less appropriate ways under given circum stances; he already possesses a good deal of intelligence although he has but little systematic knowledge. Why not start with him as he then stands? Why trouble to inquire how this practical and serviceable experience had its origin in the early months or years of life? The teacher, as such, it may be said, has little concern with it. He may take its existence for granted. Such is the contention of my critic. I think it not im probable that others may, in some degree, share his views. They may feel some impatience with my genetic treatment of the initial stages of the dawn of child consciousness, and the very beginnings of the mental life. But it must be remembered that the process of develop ment is one and continuous. It is impossible adequately to understand its later phases if the earlier stages are merely taken for granted. If once the principle of taking things for granted is admitted, we, so far, depart from the more rational principle of explaining matters. In every branch of inquiry which deals with continuity of process it has been found that the initial stages cannot be disregarded if the develop ment as a whole is to be rendered clear. If we just accept the child as he is when he comes to school, without inquiring how he came to be what he already is, we shall not be in a position to understand how best to graft the systematic knowledge with which we are chie y concerned on the naive experience with which it should be in vital touch. We pass from that to consider the phantasyreality principle, which involves a struggle of comparable importance. Phantasy, like suggestibility, is a characteristic of childhood: both tendencies have their racial value; both must be to a great extent discarded before the individual can be said to have reached maturity; both are primary factors in educability, and both are capable of abuse by educators. Phantasy is like an air-cushion: there is nothing in it, but it eases the joints wonderfully. It is the magic that tempers the winds of reality to the shorn lamb. It smooths the path of the child's adjustment to reality; and when that reality offers too menacing an aspect, it provides a way of escape. It may be stimulated from within, and find expression in day-dreams, castles in the air, a"nd in all forms of imagining and pretending; or it may be stimulated from without by fairy-tales, legends, fables, myths and allegories. All these are of the stuff of phantasy. What part should they play in the life of the child? And how far must they be discarded by the adult? In order to answer these questions, it is necessary to distinguish various forms of phantasy. The first, and by far the most common, is the compensatory phantasy. In the child, it is, in moderation, a perfectly normal response to the harshness, rigidity or monotony of real life. The weak little boy has day-dreams in which he performs incredible feats of strength and valour.
