How many people still believe that the first human being was a man? If the Bible shows that the first earth creature God created was male and female and that the woman was formed from the side, not the rib, then biblical gender equality has to be accepted as a fact, and the subordination of women needs to be acknowledged as the result of sin. The original Hebrew word that was translated as rib is sela. An accurate translation of this word should be side. Because the first woman was formed from the side and all ingredients (bone and flesh) were taken from the first human being, the man and the woman have common origin. God called both the first man and the first woman Adam (Genesis 5:2). However, after the Fall, the man kept the name Adam, which is the Hebrew word for human being, for himself and renamed the woman. By doing so, he stole humanity from the woman (and consequently from all women) and reduced her to the role of being the mother of all living, which is the translation of the Hebrew word Eve. The ruling of the man over the woman was not Gods intention, but the result of sin (Genesis 3:16). What happened in Genesis 3:16 was corrected in John 3:16. John tells us, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. This promise was made to the whole Adam, not only the male part. God redeems both the man and the woman equally. Now we do not live under sin anymore, but under grace. Therefore, Paul can write in Galatians 3:2729, For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abrahams descendants, heirs according to promise. This promise belongs to both the man and the woman. Christ reunites the male and the female again as one and calls both of them Adam.

What if the story of Eve and Adam was not meant to be a story about creation and the origin of life? What if Eve and Adam were not personifications of all women and men? What if the curse on the woman had nothing to do with the physical pain of giving birth? What if working by the sweat of the brow was a description of the slavery that existed under the monarchy? What if being cast out of the garden of Eden was a metaphor for the deportation of people from Judah to Babylon? The author of this book takes readers on a journey of inquiry leading to the conclusion that the story of Eve and Adam was authored by the theological school of Jeremiah in order to dissuade the Judean people never to reinstate the monarchy after their return from Babylon--a monarchy that previously was responsible for so much infant mortality, subjugation of women, and enslavement of its own people. At the heart of this journey is the discovery that Eve and Adam actually are metaphors for Israel and Judah--two nations that chose to have a king like other nations and suffered the consequences.

Many books have been written on the subject of biblical gender equality. However, in order to completely understand this subject, we have to fully embrace the way God created the first human being. Only a few egalitarian authors hint that the first man and the first woman have common origin. Only a handful agree with the ancient rabbis that the first Adam contained both sexes. If the Hebrew scripture can show that the first earth creature was at the same time male and female, gender equality cannot be questioned any longer and hierarchy in marriage and the church needs to be acknowledged as the result of the fall. This book challenges the reader to examine the traditional Christian interpretation of Genesis 2:7-25 in order to fully embrace biblical gender equality. In addition, it encourages Christians to take off their "cultural glasses" and look at history to find out why the Christian church accepted a hierarchical model and male dominance instead of gender equality.

Could a new Adam be preparing us for the return of Christ—but in a way not predicted in the Bible? The answer to this question can be found in the strange turn of events at the world-famous Milagro Shrine. Based in northern New Mexico, this powerful healing site has become the American counterpart to Lourdes, France. The grounds caretaker is the gentle and unassuming Adam Gwillt. As pilgrims pray at the shrine, many have enigmatic encounters with Adam. Thousands experience astonishing healings. But suddenly and for no apparent reason, Adam disappears from sight and the healings stop. Jonathan Ramsey, the protagonist of this supernatural tale of mystery and global intrigue, is a specialist in the study of sacred places who is called in to investigate the disappearance of the shrine’s healing powers. When Ramsey first encounters the site, long forgotten emotional wounds rise to the surface. This experience culminates in a mystical apparition that draws him deeply into his assignment. Ramsey interviews the strange cast of eccentric characters involved with the shrine, slowly piecing together the story of how it grew up at the foot of a cottonwood tree and rapidly expanded after numerous paranormal events—all of which point to the caretaker’s enigmatic presence. Three rival groups descend on the shrine to find Adam. A right-wing Christian organization wants to destroy him; a progressive group of modern-day Christian Gnostics plans to convince Adam to lead them as a new savior; and a third group hopes to commercialize Adam’s healing powers. The race to find Adam moves into high gear. Eventually the parties collide in a desperate attempt to capture him. As the contest resolves itself, Ramsey suddenly realizes he’s been a pawn in a larger drama. What is revealed is the very meaning of Christ’s promise to return to earth and lead humanity into a new era—but in ways not anticipated by the churches or by anyone else. Amid the international struggle to control Adam’s powers and thereby determine the future of Christian belief, Ramsey discovers his own role in fostering an epochal renewal of Christianity. Along the way, readers also learn why sacred places create communities of faith and become portals of healing power. The Adam Enigma is a rare event in spiritual fiction—a postmodern novel for the liberal or progressive reader who nonetheless loves Jesus and what he stands for. It’s Jesus-oriented fiction “for the rest of us”—creative, non-doctrinaire, and open to the future. Enjoy this page-turning mystery with its rich array of unforgettable characters, wild plot, and exotic settings
