Excerpt from The Most Popular Mother Goose Songs The old Mother Goose Songs, once the exclusive birthright of English children, have in the cour'se of centuries become the free property of the whole English-speaking child-world. But it has seemed to the publishers of this volume that these lovable children's tunes have not yet been accorded in this country a tithe of the popularity which they deserve. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the inexpensive editions have not been artistic and the artistic editions have not been inexpensive. Excerpt from Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes A search has been made among all books of nursery rhymes and songs brought out fifty years ago or more, in order that this edition should be as complete as possible. It is not claimed that there is any finality in a collection of nursery rhymes, for just as Oh, dear! What can the Matter be? Took root in the affections of children from being a popular song less than a century ago, so other rhymes are constantly being added to the children's chosen literature, or other verses to an older rhyme. Excerpt from Mother Goose's Melodies: Or Songs for the Nursery About the year 1856, a gentleman of Boston, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, while examining a file of old newspapers in the Library of the American Antiquarian Society, at Worcester, came across a dilapidated copy of the original edition of Mother Goose's Melodies. Not more than twelve or fifteen pages were left, but, as the price was only two coppers, it is not probable that there were many more. Being in search of other matter, he merely took note of the title and general condition and character of the work, intending to make a further examination of it at another time. Whether he ever did so is not known. His health being impaired, he soon after went to Europe, where he te mained for many months.
