Excerpt from The Mikado's Empire, Vol. 1 of 2: Book I. History of Japan From 660 B. C. To 1872 A. D A cycle of Cathay, which in science and practice comprises sixty years, has elapsed since President Millard Fillmore - the ini tiator Of the Japan expedition Of 1852 - began friendly relations. With the Mikado's empire. Under President Taft, in 1912, the noble precedent Of honoring Asiatic as well as European nations in their bereavement, by sending a special envoy in high Office to attend the emperor's funeral Obsequies, has been inaugurated. With the de cease of Mutsuhito the Great, the glorious era Of Meiji, or Enlight ened Government, ceases, and that Of Taisei, or Great Righteousness, under Yoshihito, the 124th Mikado, begins. In an added chapter in this twelfth edition I have noted not only a few of the great facts and events since 1906, but have also given the philosophy and in terpretation of them. Perhaps one, who in 1850, as a child, saw the launching Of Commodore Perry's flag - ship, and has during his adult life studied with sympathy the Japanese, has some right to do this. Indeed, I have reason for believing - after a lifelong acquaintance with the Japanese - that they do not ask for their country or them selves any favor beyond a just understanding Of their motives and aims, and this I have ever striven to attain.
