Jean de Joinville (c. 1224-1317) was one of the great chroniclers of medieval France. In 1241, he accompanied Theobald to the court of the king of France, Louis IX. In 1244, when Louis organized the Seventh Crusade, he decided to abandon his family to join with the Christian knights. In 1250, when the king and his troops were captured by the Mameluks in Al-Mansourah, Joinville, among the captives, participated in the negotiations and the collection of the ransom. He advised the king to stay in the Holy Land instead of returning immediately to France as the other lords had wanted; the king followed Joinville's advice. During the following four years spent in the Holy Land he was the constant advisor to the king.

On the Friday I said to them: " Sirs, I am going away over seas, and I know not whether I shall return. Now therefore, come forward; and if I have done any of you a wrong, I will right it, and will as my custom is redress in turn any grievances you may have against me or my servants." I put everything right with them as regards the public business of my estates, and in order that I might have no undue advantage, I left my seat on the council, and abode without dispute by their decisions.

Memoirs of the Prince de Joinville by Francois Ferdinand Philippe Louis Marie is the autobiography of the King of France and the third son of Louis Philippe. Excerpt: "I was born at Neuilly-sur-Seine, on the outskirts of Paris, on the 14th of August, 1818. Immediately after my birth, and as soon as the Chancellor of France, M. Dambray, had declared me to be a boy, I was made over to the care of a wet nurse and another attendant. Three years later I passed out of female hands, earlier, somewhat, than is generally the case, for a little accident befell my nurse, in which my eldest brother's tutor, an unfrocked priest, as he was then discovered to be, was also concerned."
