Gripping encounters with wildlife is the heart and soul of the book. Such thrilling situations include a dozen wild boars congregating just a few feet away from the author, a leopard crouching at hand-shaking distance under his machaan, a leopard killing a bullock very near the author's bed, a loner gaur about to stamp on him while he was sleeping out, a visit to a tiger's den, following a tiger on foot, a ferocious charge by a sloth bear, the ruthless whistling hunters on a kill, and so on. The frustration of not sighting the Melghat tiger for one and half years after joining as the field director, Melghat Tiger Project, followed by the joy of sighting the elusive Melghat tiger, are described in the stories. During his journey through Melghat, the author met a variety of his unsung heroes, for whom sufficient space is given. There are funny situations judiciously sprinkled across too--a man on the upper branch, a tiger on the middle branch, and wild dogs surrounding the tree; a nightjar landing on the body of a VIP, tipsy animals and bears. It's a comprehensive treat.

Trail of the Tiger tracks the personal and political journey of Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray against the backdrop of the changing narrative of Hindutva, and new connotations to Hindutva's subnational plot, with the rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a new Hindu Hriday Samrat. The trail of Uddhav Thackeray from a professional advertising photographer to Maharashtra's Chief Minister is not just his story. It is the story of saffron 'tiger' Balasaheb Thackeray's own family Mahabharata for political power and legacy that left the patriarch helpless during his sunset years. It is the story of one of the biggest upheavals in Indian politics where breaking a 30-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena joined Sonia Gandhi's camp, holding Sharad Pawar's finger. It is also the story of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) dilemma to deal with the tug of war in the Hindutva camp. Based on news analysis, Trail of the Tiger unpacks media content and explores intertextuality to bring readers the authentic account of the Shiv Sena's saffron to secular trajectory under the leadership of Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray.

This book deals with protected area-people interface in Bori Wildife Sanctuary and Melghat Tiger Reserve located in Satpura range of Central Indian Highlands. These forests are mostly inhabited by Gond, Korku, and Thatia tribes, a small population of agro-pastoral community and other backward classes, which have moved into these forests from adjoining areas in search of pastures for their large herds of livestock. Bori in northern Sutpura has moist deciduous forest while, Melghat in southern Satpura hills has dry deciduous forest. Both protected areas are renowned for tigers as well as for a rich faunal and floral diversity. These forests are under increasing anthropogenic pressure due to people living in and around the two protected areas. The book looks at three aspects which are a challenge for protected area management. One, it explores the web of both tribal and non-tribal life, as the intervention of market economy and increasing population have led to change in the basis of the local subsistence economy. Secondly, it tries to assess the extent of impact of biotic dependence on the forests of both protected areas. Thirdly, and most importantly, it examines the park-people conflicts and their implications for the management of both protected areas.
