This chapter contains the ceremony observed at Funerals, according to the ancient custom, together with the service on such occasions. GENERAL RULES. I. No brother can be interred with the formalities of the Order, unless lie has received the Third Degree in Masonry. II. The Master of a Lodge being notified of the death of a brother, and of his request to be buried with Masonic ceremonies, shall convene his Lodge and make all suitable arrangements to that eflect. III. If two or more Lodges attend, the ceremonies will be conducted by the Lodge of which the deceased was a member. In case of a stranger or sojourner, the Master of the Senior Lodge present will preside. IV. All the brethren who walk in procession should observe, as much as possible, a uniformity of dress. A proper badge of mourning around the left arm, with white gloves and aprons, are most suitable. It is recommended to avoid all ostentatious display of Masonic costume. V. Musicians, if belonging to. the Fraternity, will walk in procession immediately after the Tyler; if they are not Masons, they will precede him. Solemn and appropriate pieces of music only should be performed; all others are specially interdicted. VI. The cushion on which the Holy Bible is placed, should be covered with black; a piece of black crape should be tied around each Steward's rod, and around the musical instruments. VII. The most profound solemnity and decorum should be observed in a Funeral Lodge, and in the public exercises. VIII. The Brethren in circumambulating the grave, should make right angles, and in standing around the grave, should form an oblong square.
