Readings that point the way to a peaceful, democratic, and ecologically resilient transition to an era of localization, limits, and societal opportunities. Energy supplies are tightening. Persistent pollutants are accumulating. Food security is declining. There is no going back to the days of reckless consumption, but there is a possibility—already being realized in communities across North America and around the world—of localizing, of living well as we learn to live well within immutable constraints. This book maps the transition to a more localized world. Society is shifting from the centrifugal forces of globalization (cheap and abundant raw materials and energy, intensive commercialization, concentrated economic and political power) to the centripetal forces of localization: distributed authority and leadership, sustainable use of nearby natural resources, community self-reliance and cohesion (with crucial regional, national, and international dimensions). This collection, offering classic texts by such writers as Wendell Berry, M. King Hubbert, and Ernst F. Schumacher, as well as new work by authors including Karen Litfin and David Hess, shows how localization—a process of affirmative social change—can enable psychologically meaningful and fulfilling lives while promoting ecological and social sustainability. Topics range from energy dynamics to philosophies of limits, from the governance of place-based communities to the discovery of positive personal engagement. Together they point the way to a transition that can be peaceful, democratic, just, and environmentally resilient.

"Internationalization and Localization Using Microsoft .NET" shows how to localize code using Visual Studio .NET. Author Nick Symonds is an experienced developer and project manager of Windows applications intended for use worldwide. Symmonds knows the advantages of localization in the design stage and the disadvantages of localizing a project after the fact. Both methods of localizing code are discussed in this book. VS .NET has quite a few tools available for the developer to aid in the localization process. These tools are discussed in depth, and the pros and cons of each are presented to the reader. Symmonds includes a comprehensive example of a resource editor that takes readers through writing this editor in both C# and VB .NET. This project is not only useful as a product in itself, but is also instructive in how to write fairly complicated code in both .NET languages.

The field of spatial hearing has exploded in the decade or so since Jens Blauert's classic work on acoustics was first published in English. This revised edition adds a new chapter that describes developments in such areas as auditory virtual reality (an important field of application that is based mainly on the physics of spatial hearing), binaural technology (modeling speech enhancement by binaural hearing), and spatial sound-field mapping. The chapter also includes recent research on the precedence effect that provides clear experimental evidence that cognition plays a significant role in spatial hearing. The remaining four chapters in this comprehensive reference cover auditory research procedures and psychometric methods, spatial hearing with one sound source, spatial hearing with multiple sound sources and in enclosed spaces, and progress and trends from 1972 (the first German edition) to 1983 (the first English edition) -- work that includes research on the physics of the external ear, and the application of signal processing theory to modeling the spatial hearing process. There is an extensive bibliography of more than 900 items.

The essential guide to state-of-the art mobile positioning and tracking techniques—fully updated for new and emerging trends in the field Mobile Positioning and Tracking, Second Edition explores state-of-the-art mobile positioning solutions applied on top of current wireless communication networks. Application areas covered include positioning, data fusion and filtering, tracking, error mitigation, both conventional and cooperative positioning technologies and systems, and more. The authors fill the gap between positioning and communication systems, showing how features of wireless communications systems can be used for positioning purposes and how the retrieved location information can be used to enhance the performance of wireless networks. Unlike other books on the subject, Mobile Positioning and Tracking: From Conventional to Cooperative Techniques, 2nd Edition covers the entire positioning and tracking value chain, starting from the measurement of positioning signals, and offering valuable insights into the theoretical fundamentals behind these methods and how they relate to application areas such as location-based services, as well as related disciplines and professional concerns, including global business considerations and the changing laws and standards governing wireless communication networks. Fully updated and revised for the latest developments in the field, this Second Edition: Features new chapters on UWB positioning and tracking, indoor positioning in WLAN, and multi-tag positioning in RFID Explores an array of positioning and tracking systems based on satellite and terrestrial systems technologies and methods Introduces advanced and novel topics such as localisation in heterogeneous and cooperative scenarios Provides a bridge between research and industry with potential implementations of the solutions presented Mobile positioning and tracking is subject to continuous innovations and improvements. This important working resource helps busy industry professionals and practitioners—including software and service developers—stay on top of emerging trends in the field. It is also a valuable reference for advanced students in related disciplines studying positioning and mobile technologies.
