Excerpt from The Literature of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been my purpose to make this study authoritative, not only in the main, but in matters of detail. To this end the conclusions of the standard monographs dealing with its va rions phases have been embodied in the text, and such works of reference, as well as the best editions of originals, are noted in bibliographies appended to each chapter. In every case, however, I have worked at first hand with the sources them selves and can confess to little immediate debt to books about books. To friends my obligation is greater. Professor G. R. Car penter of Columbia University first called my attention to this subject ten years ago. Professor G. E. Woodberry directed my earlier investigations in the field and personally supervised the issue of my Romances of Roguery, dealing with the picar esque novel in Spain. To Sr. Menendez y Pelayo and the late Professor Jan ten Brink, as to Professor J. E. Spingarn of Columbia University, I am indebted for valuable suggestions; while to Professor W. A. Neilson of Harvard University I owe the thanks of one who has benefited by the kind offices of an admirable editor and a generous friend. F. W. C.
