Excerpt from The Literary Characteristics and Achievements of the Bible It is not without considerable hesitation that I present this volume to the public. The subject, in detached parts, has been treated by far abler pens; but, so far as I am aware, the attempt has not been made, in any single volume at least, to exhibit the subject with the same comprehensiveness and system. Where I had the labours of preceding writers to direct and aid me, I felt less hesitation; where I had not these guides, the importance of the subject not unfrequently caused me to doubt my own ability to handle it, so as while gaining the ear of those who are of literary taste and culture, there should be nothing to offend the sensibilities of a pure and simple piety. I had an abiding conviction that a free exhibition of the literature of the Bible is calculated to strengthen our belief in its divine inspiration; but, on the other hand, it needed caution, while freely exhibiting its literary characteristics, not to present the Bible as merely a literary production. Excerpt from The Bible as Literature: An Introduction This book is designed to be an Introduction to the Litera ture of the Bible, and is primarily intended for use in college Classes. This fixes at once certain limitations. It excludes the technical terms and the discussion Of detailed points Of criticism which properly appear in the many biblical introductions written for the use of those with more training. It is an introduction to the biblical literature rather than to biblical history or theology. It attempts to give such information as will make it possible for the student to enter upon our literary heritage in the Bible. That the Bible is literature is no longer a novel idea, as it was to many a short generation ago, but how to learn to appreciate its literary qualities is not always Clear even to some Of its most devoted readers. Our rightful emphasis on its religious value has obscured its literary Character. Bible study in the college classroom will serve to place the Bible in its proper position as a body of literature. When we learn to appreciate the Bible as literature we are better able to discover its true religious value. Excerpt from The Literary Character of the Bible: A Lecture Delivered Before the Wilmington Institute at Wilmington, Delaware, January 8th, 1857 Hence, to form even a proximate idea of the true liter ary value of the sacred writings, we are compelled to adopt some such process as that by which we determine the dis tance and magnitude of those bodies too far above us to be directly estimated, as the stars by their parallax. And in attempting, briefly, to carry out this design, let us eschew the method ordinarily adopted in critical essays on the Bible, and instead of dividing the books of which it consists into Historical, Prophetical, and Poetical, let us rather re gard it as one beautiful whole, composed of the three grand elements of all literature - History, Philosophy, and Poetry; for we find the facts of History, the truths of Philosophy, and the gems of Poesy, blended together on every page of the great volume, from the first startling announcement in Genesis, to the last words of John's sublime vision on the isle of Patmos. Excerpt from A Book About the English Bible Tms volume is simply what its title indicates, A Book about the English Bible. It has grown out of a series of lectures delivered to students in the University of Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to give a brief account of the English Bible, its immediate sources and their contents, their literary background and surroundings, the forms and characteristics of the constituent books and their relation to each other. To the chapters, in which these subjects are suggested, rather than discussed, have been added several others containing a short history of the translation of the Bible into English, from Saxon times to our own day. Attention is called to the differences between the commonly used English versions as regards contents and translation, and to the reasons for the differences.
