Sir Walter Scott (English Men of Letters Series) by Richard Holt Hutton Excerpt CHAPTER I. ANCESTRY, PARENTAGE, AND CHILDHOOD. Sir Walter Scott was the first literary man of a great riding, sporting, and fighting clan. Indeed, his father-a Writer to the Signet, or Edinburgh solicitor-was the first of his race to adopt a town life and a sedentary profession. Sir Walter was the lineal descendant-six generations removed-of that Walter Scott commemorated in The Lay of the Last Minstrel, who is known in Border history and legend as Auld Wat of Harden. Auld Wat's son William, captured by Sir Gideon Murray, of Elibank, during a raid of the Scotts on Sir Gideon's lands, was, as tradition says, given his choice between being hanged on Sir Gideon's private gallows, and marrying the ugliest of Sir Gideon's three ugly daughters, Meikle-mouthed Meg, reputed as carrying off the prize of ugliness among the women of four counties. Sir William was a handsome man. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 10 Miss Fergusson was on her deathbed; and thus, when my wife and I were obliged to move south wards at the beginning of winter, Sir Walter was left almost entirely dependent on his daughter Anne, William Laidlaw, and the worthy domestics whom I have been naming. Mr. Laidlaw attended him occasionally as amanuensis when his fingers were chilblained, and often dined as well as break fasted with him; and Miss Scott well knew that in all circumstances she might lean to Laidlaw with the confidence of a niece or a daughter. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 1 It appeared to me, however, that the author's modesty had prevented him from telling the story of his youth with that fulness of detail which would now satisfy the public. I have therefore recast my own collections as to the period in question, and presented the substance of them, in five succeeding chapters, as illus trations of his too brief autobiography. This procedure has been attended with many obvious disadvantages; but I greatly preferred it to print ing the precious fragment in an Appendix. Excerpt from The Complete Works of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 5: With a Bibliography, and His Last Additions and Illustrations I foresee that some readers maybe apt to accuse me of trenchin upon delicacy in certain details of the sixth ans seventh chapters in this volume. Thou h the circumstances there treated of had no trivia influence on Sir Walter Scott's history and character, I should have been inclined, for many reasons, toomit them; but the choice was, in fact not left to me, -for they had been mentioned, and mis resewed, in various receding sketches of the Life which I had un ertaken to illustrate. Such being the case, I considered it as my duty to tell the story truly and intelligibly: but I trust I have avoided any unnecessary disclosures; and, afier all, there was nothin to disclose that could have attached any sort of b ame to any of the par ties concerned.
