Excerpt from The Life and Campaigns of General Lee This must be the translator's plea to justify him in the course he has taken. He is well aware of the existence of more than one life of General Lee, compiled in English but they were written by Americans, published in America, and, therefore, are more or less imbued with the American style and mode of feeling. So far, they are unsuitable to European taste. They are, besides, long, and somewhat tiresome in their description of battles, and in their general minuteness of details. Excerpt from Life and Campaigns of General Robert E. Lee I have been led to the preparation of this work by a desire to collect in a useful and convenient form a history of the achievements of the great soldier, recently at the head of the armies of the South; and as he is endeared to his countrymen chiefly by his connection with them in the gallant struggle which has just closed, I have devoted the greater part of these pages to that portion of his life, passing over the preceding with as little delay as possible. I have brought to the execution of this task a sincere desire to lay aside the feelings engendered by four years of war, and to investigate fully, and discuss impartially and truthfully, the topics that are presented in this volume. I have spared no pains to render my sources of information as complete as possible. In May 1861, I commenced to collect such papers and documents, both official and unofficial, relating to the war, as I could procure. To this task, begun for a purpose not altogether different from that to which I have now applied it, I devoted the entire period of the war, and was aided in it by many members of the various branches of the Confederate Government and of the army. In this way I secured an extensive and valuable collection of materials for a history of the war, or biographies of the individuals connected with it; a collection embracing over fifteen thousand papers of all kinds, to which, through the kindness of friends, I have been able to add many valuable maps and charts. Excerpt from General Lee The occasion has been embraced to express the uni versal regret that General Lee never wrote anything concerning his career and campaigns. His statements would have settled conflicting opinions on all subjects contained therein. We know that it was his intention to record the deeds of his soldiers, but not to write his personal memoirs. He waited for a convenient sea son, and waited too long. In this volume the attempt has been made to imperfectly supply the great desire to have something from Robert E. Lee's. Pen, by introduc ing, at the periods referred to, such extracts from his private letters as would be of general interest. He is thus made, for the first time, to give his impressions and Opinions on most ofothe great events with which he was so closely connected. Except in a few instances, the scope of the book has not permitted the tactical details of the battlefield, or the mention by name of many of the officers and organizations whose superb courage. Excerpt from Lee and His Lieutenants: Comprising the Early Life, Public Services, and Campaigns of General Robert E. Lee and His Companions in Arms, With a Record of Their Campaigns and Heroic Deeds Authenticity is more difiicult in biography than in history; the domain of anecdote is always doubtful; and the most we can obtain of the lives of particular men comes to us through the prejudices and colours of personal narration. Sensible of the difficulties and uncertainties which beset his task, the author may yet declare that he has executed it with such care that he has admitted no statement of fact without ample authority, and mentioned not even the slightest incident without the support of credible testimony. He has been greatly assisted from the notes and memories of surviving actors of the great drama; he has drawn something from various publications contemporary with the war - among which he would especially mention the Southern Illustrated News, one of the most interesting literary souvenirs of the Confederacy; and he has explored for evidence every print and manuscript of the documentary history of the Richmond Government. At least, he has not been deficient in research, however he may have used his discoveries. It has been arranged that the biographies in this volume should cover the whole space of the action of the late war. Including all the great commanders, they contain some name dear to each part of the former Confederacy, and thus have an interest distributed through all the States of the South. Excerpt from General Lee, His Campaigns in Virginia: 1861-1865; With Personal Reminiscences Nearly thirty years ago I ventured to publish Four Years with General Lee, in which my primary Object was to assist in establishing the fact of the great numerical Odds against which the army under General Lee had to contend in its encounters with the Federal armies opposed to it. General Lee had expressed a purpose to do this, and after his death, before its accomplishment, the duty seemed logically to devolve upon me. Excerpt from The Life of General Robert E. Lee Though more than a generation has now elapsed since General Robert E. Lee passed from the scenes of his illustrious deeds, public interest in the great soldier and his career is still active, and turns with increasing curiosity to any attractive recital of the incidents in his eventful life - many as are the biographies that have already been published of him. Nor is this perennial interest in the loved hero of "a Lost Cause" to be wondered at, when we recall not only the historical importance of the long struggle in which he so nobly fought, and against such heavy odds; but the remarkable military ability and eminently high character of the man whose career is identified with the great conflict, and whose life-story is throughout so attractive and inspiring. The era is now passed when, in the North, Confederates and their sympathizers were hotly stigmatized as "rebels," and when their attitude and their cause were aspersed as hateful as well as treasonable. Excerpt from The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee: A Comparison and Contrast of the Deeds and Characters of the Two Great Leaders in the Civil War; With Introductory Reminiscences Much has been written about both Grant and Lee and the parts that each bore in the bloody strife that so nearly wrecked the Union, but, we believe, there are elements of novelty and interest in taking these two great master-spirits of the war, and, in the same book, analyzing their careers; comparing them step by step, to find what elements of similarity or dissimilarity existed between them, and wherein each succeeded or failed, and, if possible, to determine why. Such, at least, is the aim of the present work. The utmost care has been used to verify all facts and figures from the very highest authorities. No judgment has been passed on any person or event without weighing carefully all the evidence, and with a desire to be entirely fair and impartial. Special pains have been taken to avoid stirring up any spirit of controversy, and to judge each side in the great conflict only as the facts warrant. The publishers fully realize that in a narrative of so intense a struggle as the Civil War, where great bitterness was engendered, not only between the two opponents, but, also, even among some of the rival commanders on the same side, whose interests may have come in conflict, that any opinion that may be expressed about a leader, or his acts, is liable to be dissented from by those who may be his special friends or adherents.
