Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: March 14, 1912 We see then that the trials of sorrow, sickness, and distress have all their special uses in the development of goodness in man, and in fitting him for the happiness of a future state. They may be properly regarded as the discipline of life, appointed by a wise Providence, with an ulterior purpose. When we show mercy to the poor, the guilty, and the wretched, we are growing like God, one of whose great attributes is mercy. Every blessing we enjoy is a proof of this fact. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: September 14, 1905 And in their triumph die; like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, And in the taste confounds the appetite Therefore, love moderately; long love doth so Too swift arrives as tardy as-too slow. Where connubial differences occur, each Of the interested parties is likely to think the trouble lies wholly with the other and does not consider that in all probability the other has equally as much cause for complaint. Love that is blind before marriage has a remarkably keen vision afterward. If people contemplating such a union would learn to look at each other in their true light there would not be such a waste of affection before marriage nor such a famine for it later on. The spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be moderate in all things. N 0 one who properly understands the principles which the Savior taught can be an extremist. Such a one will not be too bold nor too retiring; not too violent in his love-making before the wedding nor too forgetful of his life's partner afterward. The Gospel, being the perfect law, is destined to make perfect people - people who will do everything exactly right. On the other hand. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: January 14, 1909 For nigh unto seventy years the voices of the servants of God have been heard declaring these things unto the people. Tens of thousands of missionaries and hundreds of thousands of lay mem bers of the Church have borne testimony to the world that God had manifested to them by the power of the Holy Ghost that these things are true. Now, the testimony of these thousands of witnesses must be either true or false. If it be true, then all those who reject it will come under the condemnation of the righteous Judge. But if the testimony of these witnesses be false, then condemnation will come upon all those who have borne it, and they will be denounced as deceivers and impostors. It will, therefore, be seen that the testimonies of the Latter-day Saints carry with them either sal vation or condemnation. This is a very serious matter, and we are pleased to know that it. Is beginning to be so considered by many people. A writer in a local paper a short time ago said that Mormonism had ceased to be considered a joke in this country. In the following we shall endeavor to prove that the testi mony of these witnesses is true. Why, the very nature of the testimony, it seems to us, is sufficient to do that. In the first place, why should Joseph Smith come out and declare to the world that, in answer to a fervent prayer which he sent up to the Father on high to point out to him the way of eternal life, the heavens were opened to him, and that in a glorious vision he beheld the Father and the Son; that the Lord conversed with him, and revealed unto him many great and important things pertaining to the salvation of the human family? This young man also declared with the greatest solemnity and soberness that angels ministered unto him from time to time; that they committed unto him a dispensation of the gospel, with authority to officiate in all its ordinances, and that he received from the Lord a commission to re-organize again upon the earth the Church of Christ. In testimony of the truth of these things the prophet sacrificed his life, as did also many of his devoted followers. What object could Joseph Smith have in telling such stories as these if they were not true? He could not expect to bring honor and glory to God by circulating falsehoods concerning Him; nor could he hope to gain the favor of heaven by deceiving his fellows. He could not fail to realize that his state ments, had they been false, would at the last day bring upon him the condemnation of God, who abhors lies and deception. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 91: November 14, 1929 A thoughtful study of these words reveals these great truths: First, that it is possible that knowledge not previously possessed by man may come from God our Father to His children who are here upon earth. It is probably true that Peter himself did not under stand the direct source from which the impulse that prompted his answer had come, but this scripture makes it plain that it came from God our Father, who spoke to him through the influence, or whisperings of the Holy Ghost. Another important truth which this scripture reveals is that the means of communication between 01117 Father who is in heaven and His children who are here upon earth, is the Holy Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost, communicated to us through the precious gift of revelation. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to be built upon this principle of revelation. Another very important thing which is definitely implied by these words spoken by the Redeemer of the world is that the keys which were bestowed upon Peter, when in the possession of any other man, as they were in the possession of Peter, confer upon him the authority to bind upon earth and it shall be bound in heaven to loose upon earth and it shall be loosed in heaven. Questions which are of vital importance, and in which this principle or doctrine of revelation is directly involved, have come to the Church from the time of its organization until the present. They are constantly being introduced and discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
