Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: March 4, 1926 The logical conclusion, then, is that a set of rules is needed to standardise and perfect the lives of men. The Gospel of Christ furnishes that code. Pauper or millionaire, king or serf, em ployer or employee, group in equality under its banner. The home is the foundation of civilisation; a wholesome atmosphere supports the home; the occupants create the atmosphere; and the gospel message acts as their prompter toward high ideals and goodly works. There are many homes that are torn asunder by division. Family members are in strained relations one with another, which suppress harmony and establish dissension. The Saviour realised what division and family jars meant. When the scribes accused Him of casting out devils by the prince of devils He confounded them with His remark If a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. The word of the Lord in modern revelation to certain of His servants admonished them to set in order their houses, which had become disrupted. The Lord is not pleased with internal discord in the home, and His mouthpieces on earth to-day cry loudly against it - heed them! The views of family relationships held by the Latter-day Saints are broad. To us the duration of kinship is not limited to mortality; but the knowledge that the protecting arms of family ties reach beyond the grave strengthens the tranquillity of the home on this side of the veil. If we prove successful homemakers here, we are preparing for ourselves mansions in heaven, and at the same time are getting the most out of this probation. We recommend living the Gospel as a panacea for the ills that afflict domestic abodes. What ointment is to a festering sore, what liniment is to a pulled ligament the Gospel is to strained family relations. Its precepts incite actions that will lead to complete recovery and happiness. Mormonism is definite and incisive in its claims. It speaks to the world in no uncertain tone. Its voice is virile; its activities are strong. It presents an unbroken front and is unafraid. Its attitude is not hostile, though strongly aggressive. Its methods are those of reason and persuasion, coupled with a fearless affirmation of testimony as to the surpassing importance of its message, which message it labours to convey to every nation, kindred, tongue and people - J. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good will. Add to these two great purposes as impelling factors the Divine injunction renewed in this dispensation to preach to every nation, kindred, tongue and people and you have three fundamental principles guiding the missionary work carried on by so-called Mormons. Thus impelled, Elders, authoritatively ordained and set apart began missionary work as early as six months after the organi sation of the Church. In the month of October, 1830, missionaries appointed to go into the wilderness among the Indians, preached the Gospel and distributed the Book of Mormon, the record of the Indians' forefathers, to three leading tribes in New York, Ohio, and part of Missouri. During the succeeding seven years the work continued in parts of the United States and Canada. As early as June, 1837, Elder Heber C. Kimball was set apart to preside over the English' Mission. Later, Orson Hyde and 'villard D. Richards were appointed to accompany him. They were joined also by Elder John Goodson of Canada. These Elders landed in Liverpool, July 20, 1837; three of them were penniless and had no means of obtaining any money excepting that which Elder Goodson might share with them. Literally, then, without purse or script these Elders stood on the docks of Liverpool facing the mighty responsibility of opening the great British Mission. True servants of Christ they were - seeking only the good of the world and the glory of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: January 22, 1925 Three things seem to me to be essential in the accomplishment of these wonderful promises The Lord must have the right kind of people to do His work, He must have them in the right place, and they must have the right plan. I said the Latter-day Saints are a people with a mission, they are entitled to that mission. I was thrilled not long ago when I read an article appearing in one of our national magazines. The author was discussing the question: Are the Jews the Chosen People of God? He denied them the right to claim for themselves and their posterity all the blessings pronounced upon all the sons of Jacob, but limited their blessings to their own particular line - the tribe of Judah. After tracing the history of the Jews and the several tribes of Israel the author concludes: If we could find in the earth somewhere to-day the descendants of Joseph, we would find the chosen people of God, because the blessings of Joseph were so much greater than the blessings of his brethren that you will recall they despised him and were jealous of his blessings, and sold him into Egypt; but the Lord was with him and raised him up and made him mighty to become the deliverer of his father's household. I say, when I read that statement my soul thrilled with a new sensation of gratitude to God that I live to see the day when Joseph's children are being gathered again, and realise that the Latter-day Saints are of Joseph, children of his favoured son, Ephraim, gathered one of a city and two of a family, afew from the midst of the nations of the earth, whither they have been scattered, and brought to the land of Zion. The Lord has selected and picked them. They were chosen spirits before they were born. He knew them in the Spirit world. He held them in reserve to come forth at the right time. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: December 31, 1925 But why do the modernists reject the divinity of Jesus Christ? May we not answer: It is because they do not, and apparently can not understand what is called the immaculate conception? They do not believe in Christ's miracles nor in His resurrection from the dead, for the same reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 26, 1925 Throughout the world to-day. As we have already been informed by a number of the speakers, there is commotion and a spirit of unrest; and the people, many of them, feel that it is something to their credit to hold radical views, to consider themselves to be progressive, and make attack upon things that have stood and have endured throughout the ages. This tendency is not alone found in the political world. It is found in the world of educa tion, of religion, of government, of business and everywhere. Men are departing from the well-worn paths, no matter how good they are, and feel that conservatism is a reproach; that it is the duty of man to do away with that which is Old. Or which has been established, and find something that is new. We stand prac tically alone in the world, yes, absolutely alone in the world, representing the truth of the living God, declaring to all men the principles of eternal truth which do not change. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not new in the sense in which the world looks upon things as being new, for ithas endured through the ages, not merely since the days of the advent of the Son of God, but from the beginning of the world, for the plan of salvation was prepared for the benefit of man and was declared unto him in the beginning. These principles do not change, they cannot change, they must endure immutably through all time. The Christian world may be divided into two camps, one bitterly opposing the other; one calling itself the progressive or modernist division, the other calling itself the fundamentalist division. They may think they are founded upon the truth of the Gospel as it has been established. But we stand for the revelations of God as they have been revealed in this dispensation, known. As the dispensation of the fulness of times, unchangeable, immutable, enduring forever, because they are eternal. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: October 8, 1925 These conditions are that we shall have faith in our Father in Heaven and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the atonement wrought by Jesus for our salvation; that we sincerely repent of our sins; and be baptised by immersion for the remission of our sins, by one who has the authority to perform that sacred ordinance. After having conformed to the ordinance of baptism we may receive the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands; and we should thenceforth live righteous lives before God and our fellow men. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: January 15, 1925 Book of Mormon, containing also the fulness of the everlasting Gospel; the coming of another angel, John the Baptist, to confer upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery tho Aaronic Priesthood, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; the visitation of three other heavenly messengers, the Apostles, Peter, James and John, delivering the keys of the Melchizedek Priesthood, the power to bestow the Holy Ghostfiipon those baptised in the right manner and by the proper authority. By virtue of these priesthoods this Church was organised, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter (lay Saints (april 6, and thus was lifted the ensign for the gathering of scattered Israel, the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that they might be ready to meet their God and King, who is coming to reign literally upon the earth. Subsequently came Moses, to restore the keys Of the gathering, to authorise the assembling of the House of Israel then Elias, repeating the promise made to Abraham, that in him and in his seed should all the nations of the earth be blessed - a promise fulfilled in the coming of Christ through the lineage of the Hebrew patriarchs, and in the dispersion of Israel among all nations, so that the blood that believes, that has faith in the true God, might be sprinkled over the world, and that out of every nation under heaven might come in the last days some of the chosen people, to build up Zion on this goodly land and prepare the way before the glorious coming of the Lord. Finally the Prophet Elijah, who holds all the keys of the Priesthood, appears and confers upon Joseph and Oliver the keys to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, in order that a link might be welded between the living and the dead, between the present and the past, and a work done that will eventually unify and bring together all things in Christ, both in heaven and on earth. What could be more marvelous, more wonderful than this? And yet the wisdom of the world passes it by as a thing of naught.
