Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: October 21, 1915 It is customary to place in the cornerstone of public buildings a number of articles that may be of historical interest to future generations, and this custom was followed. President Edward J. Wood, of the Alberta stake, after the opening exercises and a brief address by President Heber C. Allen, of the Alberta stake, enumerated the articles that had been placed in the hermetically sealed metal box which was to be deposited under the stone, as follows: Photograph of the Prophet Joseph Smith, with a lock of his hair given by Sarah Ann Woolsey. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: October 14, 1915 But this is not the question at issue between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other churches. We main tain that the scriptures predict a general and complete apostasy from the Church of Christ, and that this apostasy actually took place. We claim that the reign of antichrist was established instead of the sovereignty of our Lord, and that this revolution was as radical as if the people of Great Britain should discard their wonderful democratic form of government and establish auto cracy in its stead. We, further, believe that God again has intro duced His Spiritual government among the children of men, by establishing the Church through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph Smith. We hold that all the churches of the world have deviated from the teachings of our Lord, introduced ordinances different from those instituted by Him, and changed the form of government He established. The Roman church, particularly in the matter of church government, patterned after pagan Rome, and her daughters have followed her very closely. The question, then, is not, whether all churches have emanated from Rome, but whether the Church of Christ has remained on earth, in any of the existing sects, from the day of its foundation until now; or, whether it was necessary to establish it again by means of direct revelation, as at first. The latter proposition, we hold, is true, and can be proved from the Scriptures and from history. With regard to the second point, history is so clear that there should be no excuse for doubt as to which church seceded from the other. To say that Rome seceded from the Anglican church is a mere juggling with words, as if one should say that, by the American War of Independence in 1776, England seceded from the American colonies involved in that conflict. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: October 7, 1915 And from the economic standpoint, I know that the prohibition of the manufacture and sale of alcoholic liquors will be one of the greatest boons that ever blessed humanity; a tremendous factor for good to every man, woman and child in the nation; a harbinger to all mankind in the struggle for success; and one of the most potent agencies on earth to increase the material wealth of America, in the march of time, and the onward and upward pro gress of civilization. I know that for every dollar the state gets from its association with the liquor business, it costs the taxpayers at least $20 to support courts and ju'ries, hospitals and asylums, paupers and prisoners, poor-houses and penitentiaries. We boast that New' York is the greatest and the richest state in the Union; It has a population of more than Its estimated wealth is more than and its annual revenue from the liquor traffic is not less than The people of New York spend every year for alcoholic liquors more than - just twenty times as much as the state derives from the revenue. Most of the money Spent for liquor comes from the poor, and if it were deposited in savings banks to the credit of the toilers, we would have a state without a pauper. It costs the state of New York, every year, directly or indirectly, on account of the evil effects of the nefarious traffic, more than - a sum that staggers the mind - and if this vast sum of money could be conserved by the people, the per capita wealth of New York would be greater than that of any other people, in any other time, in all the annals of the world. If the state of New York were to save the money the indulgence in strong drink costs the taxpayers annually, and if it were utilized for public purposes, it would develop our great water powers and give us light, heat, and power free of cost. It would build the best dirt roads and the greatest railways since the dawn of history. It would erect beautiful public buildings; it would dig the widest and the deepest canals ever constructed on earth; it would rear the best and the most magnificent school houses for the education of our future citizens; it would increase every channel of commerce and every line of human endeavor more than twenty per cent, and to that extent it would increase the earning and the saving capacity of our workers. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: July 8, 1915 With all these talents to its credit, charity can, I think, be classed above all things which we should seek for, with the possible exception of love. But love and charity are so inseparably united that they are almost one and the same thing. It is an impossibility to have charity without love, or love without charity. Where one is the other is always to be found, and if we have charity from which the love has evaporated, it is not charity; but mock charity. Above all things, says Peter, have fervent charity among yourselves, and Paul's testimony - above all things put on charity - is just as strong. The reason for these statements is, that if you put on charity, ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of your Lord Jesus Christ; you will not need to worry about sins, for charity shall cover the multitude of sins, and your doubts will vanish because charity is the bond of perfectness, and the end of commandment out of a pure heart. Charity, then, is the one thing which we must all possess. We must coax it, cajole it, pamper it; anything to get it. And when we do get it, make it the central rallying point for thought; speak it and act it, that you may become sound in it; let flee all youth ful lusts and follow charity, and then you may call on the Lord out of a pure heart, and join with Paul in saying, We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: December 2, 1915 Finally, the time came when the father called them all back to him and rewarded his children according to their diligence and faithfulness in keeping the various commandments he had given them. He separated the faithful from the unfaithful, but allowed them to visit their unfaithful brothers and sisters, that they might advise them concerning the best methods of improving their condition. Thus is stated, briefly, in story form, the work and glory of God, which is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (pearl of Great Price 1: God is the Father of the spirits of all men, just as our earthly parents are the fathers and mothers of our earthly, or temporal, bodies (heb. 12: Before we came to this earth we all existed with God, the Father, being His offspring (acts 17: He is the Father of all our spiritual bodies, and naturally our spiritual bodies had the fundamental organs that our earthly bodies now have, such as eyes, ears, arms, etc., but were composed of a finer and purer substance than our ordinary earthly senses can discern (doc. And Gov. 131: 7 That spiritual body is now, while we are upon this earth, clothed with an earthly body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: November 4, 1915 I must do the best I can, the best I know how, for those whom God has entrusted to my care. I must do, to the best of my know ledge and of my understanding, my duty toward the people of God over whom He has willed that I should be a humble minister and teacher of the gospel, and with whom He has honored me with the presidency over the Church.
