Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: June 4, 1908 Fairchild 'of Oberlin College, Ohio, U. S. A., and on comparison with the Book of Mormon it was found to be totally different in every particular from that work, and it is now kept in the library of that institution, and has been copied and printed and is offered for sale wherever the Book of Mormon is published. All this has been threshed out so often as to have become monotonous to many people, and we apologize to the readers of the star for recurring to the subj ect, but its recent revival gives reason for this reference. As is well known to everybody who has seen the Book of Mormon, it has for a preface the testimony of Three Witnesses that the plates from which it was translated were shown to them by an angel of God, and of eight witnesses that they had seen and handled the plates by natural means, and had inspected the hieroglyphics engraved thereupon. In the leaflets now distributed, and in the puerile attempt of a Liverpool clergyman to attack this testimony, it is stated that the Three Witnesses spoken of left the Mormon Church and denied their former statement. It is for the purpose of showing the utter falsity of this recent fabrication that we take up the matter again. Here is the testimony of the Three Witnesses as it has appeared in every issue of the Book of Mormon from the opening of the year 1830 to the present time: Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come, that we, through the grace of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of N ephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken; and we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for His voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety, that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ that we beheld and bear record that these things are true; and it is marvelous in our eyes, nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found Spotless before the judgment seat of Christ and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: November 5, 1908 Another lesson we can learn from this item of history is: that just as the Nephite vessel did not make progress while her captain was bound, neither can we make progress in the Church of Christ if we tie ourselves up by cords of our own weaving. These are some of the bands by which, if we bind ourselves, we shall stay our progress and go back in the way of life and salvation. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 2, 1908 Faith is the first principle of true religion. Without faith it is impossible for a man to please God. The apostle extols this great principle in his writings, and uses several illustrations to Show how individuals obtained Divine favor because of their faith. He speaks of Abraham, who believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness. We can see the necessity of Paul laying so much stress on faith; he knew that if he did not, first of all, persuade those people to believe in Christ they would not obey the gospel of the Redeemer. But notice how differently he writes to those who believed in God, and who had accepted His Son as their Savior and Redeemer. In an epistle to Titus, he said: This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. (titus 3: This clearly shows that Paul was not opposed to good works. On the contrary, he applauds them and instructs Titus to teach the people constantly to perform them In this he was simply reiterating the words of the Messiah, who said to His disciples: Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 9, 1908 He that receiveth you, receiveth me, ' said Jesus to His disciples 'and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.' Your friend will admit that the people who rejected the gospel taught by the Lord's divinely-commissioned apostles were just as much under condemnation as those who rejected it when preached by the Master Himself; he will also admit that those who received the gospel taught by the apostles received the same blessings from the Father as though they had received it from the lips of His only begotten Son; and when he admits these things, he must also admit that those who received baptism at the hands of the Lord's servants were just as acceptable to God as they would have been if baptized by His Son Jesus Christ. One day when Christ was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and the elders asked Him by what authority He taught the people. Turning to them He said: 'i also will ask you one thing The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of. Men?' (matt. 21: 24 Now, had the Lord not considered baptism an essential ordinance, He would not have asked this question. It is only by admitting the essentiality of baptism that we can save our blessed Lord from the charge of having spoken foolishly on that occasion. Had baptism not been considered a saving ordinance of the gospel in the days of the Savior, these people could have turned to the Messiah and said, 'why ask us such a question? Baptism has nothing to do with our salvation, therefore it matters not to'us from whence it came, whether from heaven or of men.' Surely your friend must see that the chief priests and the elders are witnesses against him? Their silence testifies to the importance which the people attached to the ordin ance of baptism in the early days of Christianity. It has arrested the attention of the wise and learned in both hemispheres, and they have exhausted their wisdom and learning in trying to overthrow it; but all their efforts have been in vain, the words of the prophet have been fulfilled to the letter the wisdom of their wise men has perished and the understanding of their prudent men has been hid.
