Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Emily Lilian Whiting (1847-1942) was an American journalist, poet and author whose father was Illinois State Senator Lorenzo D Whiting. The only daughter, she was educated largely under private tuition and by her parents. Books and periodicals abounded in the family home and her bent was always towards literature and the world of thought. She served as literary editor of the Boston Evening Traveller from 1880-90, was editor-in-chief of the Boston Budget for the following three years and afterwards spent much of her time travelling in Europe. This work was first published in 1906 and is reprinted from an edition of 1909. Illustrated with photographs throughout.
