Excerpt from The Ladder to the Stars Miriam sat down by the round table which stood in the middle of the room, and with a final tug got off the damp thread gloves and laid them on the table. A weariness of mind, not of body, overcame her for a moment at this reception. Oh, I do not know; I like the exercise and the freshness of the fields and the quiet, she explained. Aunt Pillar surveyed her niece disapprovingly, pursing her lips together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Stars and Their Stories: A Book for Young People MY purpose here is to interest the child in the stars, which are always with him; to stimulate his imagination; and to direct him in a pastime - the hunting out of the constellations and individual stars - that may become an enduring joy. With the help of the oblong charts and their duplicates, in which Miss Boroughs has placed the animals, he can learn the constellations separately and in groups, with the ancient mythic animals in their places; and by using the round charts at the back of the book, he can see the sky as a whole, as it appears from our Northern Hemi sphere during the different seasons, and trace out the smaller or less important constellations which I have not given. A good way to learn the configurations that form the constellations is to draw them. If the charts are held over the head, with the cardinal points in the proper places, the stars can be seen as they are in the sky; or the same result can be obtained by one who sits facing the south and holds the charts with the north end upwards. If any child has as much pleasure in reading this book as I have had in preparing it, or obtains a broader outlook upon life from its perusal, all my efforts will be fully repaid. Albert Pope's 1996 seminal book Ladders is now available in a second edition. Considered a classic in the field of urbanism and one of our most requested out of print titles, Pope's provocative study of five post-war American cities examines the forces--including demographic upheavals, market expansions, and technological developments--that precipitated a change from the open system of the pre-war urban grid to the fragmented and closed spaces of suburban cul-de-sacs, expressways, and office parks. Through an incisive series of diagrams and photographs, Pope reveals the concepts, theories, and rules that have guided their organizational evolution into post architectural spaces whose character is shaped more by the effects of immense urban spaces and infrastructure than built forms. A new preface by architect and educator Pier Vittorio Aureli situates the book in the context of contemporary urban thinking and makes a compelling argument for it's continued relevance as springboard for the investigation of our contemporary cities.

Excerpt from The Book of Stars for Young People This little work is the outcome Of many suggestions on the part of friends who were anxious to teach their small children something Of the marvels Of the heavens, but found it exceedingly difficult to get hold of a book wherein the intense fascination of the subject was not lost in conventional phraseology - a book in which the stupendous facts were stated in language simple enough to be read aloud to a child without paraphrase. A poetic and richly sensual chronicle of a Westerner's unexpected love affair with Morocco Pamela Windo chronicles her love of Morocco and its people in this wondrous collection of true stories, peeling back layers of history, paint, and finely embroidered fabrics to find the truths in the mysterious and the exotic. She describes the colors, flavors, songs, and textures of an almost dream-like nation. Her stories are of snatched affairs, unforeseen warmth, and subtle eroticism in shadowed courtyards. The results are liberating and uplifting portraits of places and people, each told with an extraordinary delicacy. Behind the veils, she discovers kindness, beauty, and passion that afford her life a whole new dimension.
