The Kimberley Craton of Western Australia was subjected to rifting in the Paleoproterozoic along the North Australian Craton margin followed by plate collision that formed the Diamantina Craton as part of Nuna. An intra-oceanic arc accreted to the continent which collided with the craton. Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic basins formed during the breakup of Rodinia. Neoproterozoic through Cambrian time formed basins across the Kimberley. The King Leopold uplift, thermal subsidence, and Devonian reef complexes were deposited. The Halls Creek and Alice Springs uplifts followed. Triassic and later Mesozoic cover sequences formed a veneer over these basins. Chapter 1 introduces the geology of the Kimberley Craton. Chapter 2 presents the geology of the Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range. Chapter 3 offers a field excursion through the Spring Creek Track of the western part of the national park. Chapter 4 offers daily trip suggestions ranging from single day to an unlimited tour excursion. Chapter 5 presents geologic descriptions of national park features around the Bungle Bungles.

The supercontinent-cycle hypothesis attributes planetary-scale episodic tectonic events to an intrinsic self-organizing mode of mantle convection, governed by the buoyancy of continental lithosphere that resists subduction during the closure of old ocean basins, and the consequent reorganization of mantle convection cells leading to the opening of new ocean basins. Characteristic timescales of the cycle are typically 500 to 700 million years. Proposed spatial patterns of cyclicity range from hemispheric (introversion) to antipodal (extroversion), to precisely between those end members (orthoversion). Advances in our understanding can arise from theoretical or numerical modelling, primary data acquisition relevant to continental reconstructions, and spatiotemporal correlations between plate kinematics, geodynamic events and palaeoenvironmental history. The palaeogeographic record of supercontinental tectonics on Earth is still under development. The contributions in this Special Publication provide snapshots in time of these investigations and indicate that Earth’s palaeogeographic record incorporates elements of all three end-member spatial patterns.

This volume has its origin in a short course sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America and the Geochemical Society held in San Diego, California on the 11th and 12th December 2015, ahead of the American Geophysical Union’s Fall Meeting, which featured a session with the same title. Topics in this volume include: analytical methods and data quality experimental constraints applied to understanding HSE partitioning nucleosynthetic variations of siderophile and chalcophile elements HSE in the Earth, Moon, Mars and asteroidal bodies HSE and chalcophile elements in both cratonic and non-cratonic mantle, encompassing both sub-continental and sub-oceanic lithosphere the importance of the HSE for studying volcanic and magmatic processes, and an appraisal of the importance of magmatic HSE ore formation in Earth’s crust. Highly siderophile and strongly chalcophile elements comprise Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Rh, Pd, Au, Te, Se and S and are defined by their strong partitioning into the metallic phase, but will also strongly partition into sulfide phases, in the absence of metal. The chemical properties of the HSE mean that they are excellent tracers of key processes in high temperature geochemistry and cosmochemistry, having applications in virtually all areas of earth science.
