Excerpt from The Industries of Kansas City: Historical, Descriptive, and Statistical Missouri was organized as a Territory in July, 1812, and admitted as a State by the Missouri Compromise bill, approved March 6, 1820, the State Constitution being adopted July 19, following. The territory em braced in Jackson County had been successively a part of St. Louis, Howard and Cooper counties, under the Territorial government. In November, 1820, the county of Lillard was established, and its name was changed to Lafayette County, February 16, 1825. By an act approved December 15, 1826, the county of Jackson was organized, and Kaw Township was established in May of the following year.
