A new framework for helping nonprofit organizations maximize the effectiveness of their boards. Written by noted consultants and researchers attuned to the needs of practitioners, Governance as Leadership redefines nonprofit governance. It provides a powerful framework for a new covenant between trustees and executives: more macrogovernance in exchange for less micromanagement. Informed by theories that have transformed the practice of organizational leadership, this book sheds new light on the traditional fiduciary and strategic work of the board and introduces a critical third dimension of effective trusteeship: generative governance. It serves boards as both a resource of fresh approaches to familiar territory and a lucid guide to important new territory, and provides a road map that leads nonprofit trustees and executives to governance as leadership. Governance as Leadership was developed in collaboration with BoardSource, the premier resource for practical information, tools and best practices, training, and leadership development for board members of nonprofit organizations. There is no calling, no more vital responsibility, than the education of our nation's and world's future leaders. Independent and faith-based schools succeed and thrive in the presence of visionary leadership. In its absence, schools struggle and often fail to achieve their mission. The success story for schools is the strength of the leadership found in the relationship between the head of school, the board chair, and all trustees. It is through this relationship, partnership, and acceptance of roles and responsibilities where this health and this success can be found.

Being a member of the Board of Trustees for a private school is certainly an honor. You are asked to take into your care a school--to ensure that each student's education fulfills the school's mission, and that all students are nurtured and developed to their benefit. You must carry out that care by providing support-resources-to the School Head. Your relationship to the school-as with all Trustees--determines whether your school will be successful in the long term.Being a Board member is also somewhat puzzling. If you're like many Trustees, you're not sure how it happened. Maybe you were approached at a social event. Maybe another Board member had talked to you a while ago about it on the phone; you may even have forgotten the conversation. Maybe you were serving on a committee and this seemed the next logical step. You've become a private school Trustee. Now what? This book is based on more than four decades of working with the Boards of hundreds of private schools. Independent School Management (ISM) has honed its research and recommendations over those years to provide the best possible service to our schools. We hope you'll find the following theory and advice valuable as you better prepare your Board to plan for your school's future. The organization and responsibilities of trustees of independent schools has changed and increased greatly over the last decade. The first chapter gives a summary of independent school trusteeship that may aid in the orientation of new trustees. The five concepts of trusteeship are discussed: ethos, change, partnership, leadership, and volunteer service. Chapter 2 breaks down the board organization and describes the duties of officers and committees, particularly, board size, board composition, board meetings, and trustee selection, orientation, and evaluation. The third chapter describes the board's responsibility for the establishment of the school's mission, formation of board policy, assessment of the school's performance, financial management, and development and fund raising activities. Chapter 4 focuses on the role of the head of the school and the relationship between board and head. Chapter 5 deals with the search process made by the board in the selection of the new head of school. Sample board chair and head evaluation forms are appended. (SI)
