Excerpt from The History of the Book of Common Prayer This volume is intended to illustrate the history and meaning of the Book of Common Prayer, and more especially of those services which are in most frequent use or have been the subjects of theological discussion. The author has sometimes ventured to repeat his state ments in different chapters, in order to make each chapter as intelligible and complete as its necessary limits will permit. The phrase common prayers was used in the middle of the sixteenth century to signify what we call public worship.' It was used not only by the reform ing party in the Church, but also by their opponents, and it is therefore an error to suppose that the adop tion of the name was intended to mark a difference between the reformed and the unreformed worship of the Church in England. Excerpt from The Book of Common Prayer: Interpreted by Its History To attain the ends of public worship, it is necessary that we should "pray" both "with the spirit and with the understanding." In our public assemblies for the worship of God we should, therefore, adopt such a method as is best calculated to effect that object. The Church, throughout all ages, imitating Scriptural example, has adopted forms of prayer. That branch of the Church to which it is our privilege to belong, by providing for our use that Liturgy, whose history, origin, and doctrine it is my purpose briefly to unfold, has declared it her opinion that this object is best secured by the use of such a prescribed formulary of prayer, as shall both meet the wants of the spirit and satisfy the demands of the understanding. An examination of the grounds of this opinion will show it to be firmly founded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Book of Common Prayer Then object of this series is to provide for the clergy and laity of the Church a statement, in convenient form, of its Doctrine, Discipline and Worship - as well as to meet the often expressed desire on the part of Examining Chaplains for textbooks which they could recommend to candidates for Holy Orders. To satisfy, on the one hand, the demand of general readers among the clergy and laity, the books have been provided with numerous references to larger works, making them introductory in their nature; and on the other hand, to make them valuable for use in canonical examinations, they have been arranged according to the Canons of the Church which deal with that matter. It is the earnest hope of the collaborators in this series that the impartial scholarship and unbiased attitude adopted throughout will commend themselves to Churchmen of all types, and that the books will therefore be accorded a general reception and adopted as far as possible as a norm for canonical examinations. The need of such a norm is well known to all. And finally a word to Examining Chaplains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the Successive Revisions of the Book of Common Prayer Tats introduction (which was commenced with the idea that it would occupy but some thirty or forty pages) was in tended to be prefixed to the volume entitled 77x Firs! Mm, which was issued two months since, and to sup ply only a few notes respecting the chief documents relating to the issue of the several Books. The unforeseen extent of the concordance TO ran Runarcxs which was added at the end of that volume, involved the omission of the Intro duction, as the book was already quite as thick as was com patible with the size. Some few pages had already been printed, and instead of destroying them, I determined to transfer them to another volume, and to print in full a large mass of material relating to the last Revision of the Book of Common Prayer, from which at first I had intended but to select some few illustrative emples. Excerpt from The Prayer-Book: Its History, Language and Contents There is no book, with the exception of the Bible itself, to which English Churchmen are so warmly attached as the Book of Common Prayer, and yet it is to be feared that even among educated Churchmen there is much ignorance of its history, its teaching, its language, and the principles of its construction. This is, surely, a matter for grave consideration. Bearing in mind the large use we make of the prayer-book (a larger use than is made of any corresponding book in any other Church), it. Must be highly important that every member of the Church should, as far as possible, be' in possession of such knowledge as would enable him to fairly comprehend its scope, meaning, and authority. Excerpt from A Short History of the Book of Common Prayer: Together With Certain Papers Illustrative of Liturgical Revision, 1878-1892 The opening paper of this collection was originally read as a lecture before a liturgical class, and is now published for the first time. The others have appeared in print from time to time during the movement for revision. If they have any permanent value, it is because of their showing, so far as the writer's part in the matter is concerned, what things were attempted and what things failed of accomplishment. Should they serve as contributory to some future narrative of the revision, the object of their publication will have been accomplished. So much has been said as to the poverty of our gains on the side of "enrichment," as compared with what has been secured in the line of "flexibility," that it has seemed proper to append to the volume a Comparative Table detailing the additions of liturgical matter made to the Common Prayer at the successive revisions.
