Excerpt from The Health Bulletin Of course, concern for the health of the people is nothing new for us. North Carolina pioneered in the Better Health Movement during the 1940's and has never ceased its efforts to improve services. Under the leadership of the State Board of Health, an excellent system of local public health services has been developed. During this biennium a total of $800,000 was made available in State aid to local health departments. At the State level new programs are being implemented which will insure quality care in the transportation of the sick and injured and in genetic counselling. Existing programs for the control of salt marsh mosquitoes, for the inspection of food and lodging establishments and for the dental care program were strengthened. The fine system of local hospitals is a credit to many people who worked on the local, State and Federal levels under the coordination of the North Caroline Medical Care Commission. North Carolina now ranks 12th from the top among States in the number of hospitals and 15th in the number of hospital beds constructed and 3rd in the number of Public Health Centers developed under the cooperative financing program. North Carolina has at Chapel Hill the only State-supported medical center in the South, with major professional schools for medicine, dentistry, nursing, public and pharmacy. Excerpt from The Health Bulletin, Vol. 53: January, 1938 Health Bulletins for May 1923, January 1935, and June 1937 contain general articles on health department organization and activities. Below is found in bare outline form a list of some of the activities of local health departments divided according to that done by different members of the local staff. Several county, dis triet, and city departments have large staffs and in such communities the territory may be divided among sev eral workers, while that done by each individual (such as public health nurse) remains generalized. The tendency toward keeping a general ized' service is not so uniform among the sanitation personnel as it is among the nursing staff. In general, however, the services are similar whether the population served by the local health department is large or small. Excerpt from The Health Bulletin, 1944, Vol. 59 Another most helpful gadget to the plant chemist, and one which interests visitors, is the simple table located in the laboratory. Water from various points throughout the process of treatment is brought to the table by the simple snap of a switch. These samples from five different places - namely, raw water, treated water, settled water, filtered water, and finished water - run through five glass jars. At this point, a visual comparison can be made of the water. Also, samples for daily tests may be collected here.
