Excerpt from The Harp on the Willows Now, dear friends, to be as honest as yourselves, I have great fear that you do not understand the case, and some fear that you will not study it. If the vval denses were about to be ejected from those valleys, which they hold by solemn treaty, I could count on your interference. Or if the civil courts of Constanti nople were tampering with the internal arrangements of our Ambassador's chapel, I believe that you would think it right that our Government should remonstrate. Now that the Queen of Madagascar is concussing Christian consciences, I know that many of you are indignant, and would interpose your protection if you could. If you will hear me patiently, I promise to show that the cases are too' parallel; and as I shall endeavour to relieve the subject of all intricate details and metaphysical niceties, so I earnestly trust that, if I make out a case of grievance or of suffering for con science' sake, you who have are now listened to a voice from Piedmont, will not shut your ears against a voice from the Church of Scotland. Excerpt from The Harp on the Willows; Remembering Zion; Farewell to Egypt; The Church in the House; The Dew of Hermon, and Destination of the Jews Two months ago I went to Edinburgh to attend the Convocation of Ministers. Like many of my countrymen, my heart used to beat harder when I came in sight of that city of reformers and covenanters, of hallowed Sabbaths, and crowded churches, and solemn assemblies. Its towers and steeples used to say, Mount Zion stands most beautiful. But on this occasion "how did the city sit solitary!" Its pleasant sanctuaries had a look of widowhood; and the most melancholy object of all was, a gorgeous unfinished structure on the Castle hill, reared for the Assemblies of the Church of Scotland, but more likely to be their cenotaph. Ministers preached, and congregations worshipped, as under warning to quit: and there was much of a farewell solemnity in every service. Excerpt from The Golden Harp: Hymns, Rhymes, and Songs for the Young In thofe of the Poems which have to do with facred ftibjeets, everything of feetarianifm has been carefully avoided. The broadef't principles of Chrifiian truth alone are exhibited; with the object of infpiring love and gratitude, rather than of exciting terror - of awakening the fure and cer tain hope of glory rather than the fear of death and hell, in thofe little ones who, we are taught to believe, have received not the fpirit of bon dage again, to fear, but the fpirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father. Excerpt from The Harp of Renfrewshire: A Collection of Songs and Other Poetical Pieces Aware of these circumstances, and foreseeing the consequences which they involve in their train, the Editors of this Publication have exerted themselves not a little to counteract, if they could not altogether remove, their unfavourable tendencies. They can safely state that, to the utmost of their scanty ability, and the limited nature of their means, they have endeavoured to render it sufficiently valuable in respect of its matter to secure it from contempt; and sufficiently reputable in so far as their character of Editors or Publisher was implicated, to shield it from the petulant and puerile strictures "Of the small critic with his delicate pen." No apology, they have deemed, is necessary for again treading a path which has right often been trodden before: nor for selecting, in a variety of instances, those very blossoms of genius and poesy which their predecessors in the same beaten highway have previously culled. They conceive that a good song, like a good story, may be twice told, without deterioration in any degree from its interestingness and intrinsic merit. As a rose loses nothing of its bloom, complexion and fragrance, though enjoyed by our senses every day; in like manner, they can fancy a good song will always be listened to with satisfaction, however often heard, and yet after all, not 'bate one jot of its worth by the frequency of repetition. But independent of this, the Harp of Renfrewshire, they are proud to say, has higher claims to notice, altogether distinct from those which a work of mere selection can prefer. Excerpt from The Northern Harp Containing Songs From the St. Lawrence: And Forest Melodies Mrs. Bigelow has been for several years a regular contributor to the columns of several periodicals, and, thus far, has had no reason to reproach the public with any lack of attention to her poetical productions. Nearly three hundred have thus been published; and the flattering reception they have enjoyed, seems to afford ground for the belief that this publication will not be unsuccessful. The Editor has found no lack of materials, having been permitted to examine more than a thousand manuscripts.
