Writers can't not write. Goaded by dreams and thoughts, writers write because they'll simply burst if they don't. They have these urges to get it all out-from A to Z-from soup to nuts. They tackle those germs of thought, feeding and weeding and coaxing them to grow, perchance to blossom into something worthwhile-something beautiful-something that challenges or inspires. The 2014 San Diego Writers/Editors Guild anthology is a compilation of the various forms of the art. It is a bouquet of ideas-fantasy, whimsy, humor, and romance-often with a twist. Whether fact or fiction from seasoned and multi-published veterans or authors making their publishing debut, the contributors have drawn from the wells of their talent to share the memories pulled from life experience or the thoughts bumping around in their heads. They spun yarns. They told tales. They opened doors to the imagination-conjuring, questioning, and stirring. They glimpsed other worlds and they brought them to you. They did what they must. They wrote. (Marcia Buompensiero, Editor) We thank the muses of poetry who tickle and throttle. Their lofty to elemental snapshots of life entice us to ponder the infinite in the moment by amplifying the human spirit. We celebrate their inspiration and bring you their captured experiences from creative curious children-to seasoned citizens. (Simone Arias, Poetry Editor)

Enter the writer's world-this collection of short stories, poems and imaginative essays is the culmination of lifetimes of experience, of memory, of love, of determination, perseverance and hard work. Writers write to tell our own stories, write our own histories, reveal our own truths. The deeper the writer goes in the process, the more you lose your way, and find yourself. The writers in this anthology are members of the San Diego Writers & Editors Guild, a nonprofit organization which promotes, supports and encourages writing for youth and adults. Royalties from the sale of "The Guilded Pen" help fund the worthy endeavor of supporting San Diego writers, allowing for the fullness of their expression. In a vital way, this anthology promotes writers by presenting an opportunity for publication, a fine and noble achievement. It encourages reading, by offering the best efforts of our local writers, from bestselling authors to previously unpublished poets, and the opportunity to discover the many literary styles and subjects found in our own communities. Kathi Diamant-author, writing instructor and coach.

"If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of The Elements of Style . The first greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they're happy." Dorothy Parker New beginnings imply there were previous, possibly failed, attempts-other tries that just didn't "take." Some might say "new beginnings" is redundant. After all, aren't all beginnings new? And when is a new beginning begun? A challenge, indeed, if you are a writer. Whether a neophyte rower clearly out of your league, a washed up detective looking for that redeeming case, an ex-con questioning ones self-worth, a new bride with second thoughts, or somewhere/anywhere in between, our authors took the theme and spun it around, whipped it up, and turned it into something refreshing, stimulating, soul-wrenching, thought-provoking, or simply fun. We all may not share the same concept of what constitutes a new beginning and our experiences can be worlds and galaxies apart, but the one common thread that pulls us together is the passion to write and share inner-most thoughts and creativity. Some might even argue that the writer's desire is strong enough to overcome criticism and rejection. Others will say that sharing our talents and inner struggles is redemption all its own. But in the end, the baring of the soul in creative art forms becomes the end point, the greater goal. There are those writers, as Ms. Parker suggests, that might even be willing to take a bullet for it! Managing Editors: Marcia Buompensiero & Rivkah Sleeth Contributing Editors: Irene Flynn, Asst. From the internationally bestselling author of Into the Wilderness comes a magnificent epic about two pioneering women doctors in 19th-century New York. The year is 1883, and in New York City it's a time of dizzying splendor, crushing poverty, and tremendous change. With the gravity-defying Brooklyn Bridge nearly complete and the city in the grip of anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock, Dr Anna Savard and her cousin, Sophie - both graduates of the Women's Medical School - treat the city's most vulnerable. Even when doing so puts all they've worked for in jeopardy . . . For Anna, her role as a surgeon has placed her in the path of four children who have lost everything. Faced with their helplessness, Anna must make the unexpected choice between holding on to the pain of her past and letting love into her life. For Sophie, an obstetrician and the orphaned daughter of free people of color, helping a desperate young mother forces her to grapple with her doctor's oath - and thrusts her and Anna into Comstock's orbit, a dangerous man who considers himself the enemy of everything indecent, and of anyone who dares to defy him. With its vivid depictions of old New York and its story of two pioneering female doctors, The Gilded Hour is a captivating, emotionally gripping novel of courage and love.

This book, "Tom's Poetry: from back when to right now", is a collection of poems I've written over several decades. Many have been published in anthologies, newspapers and magazines, and my own books. They address five different time periods and themes, starting with early days, e.g. "Growing up," to " Family and friends" to "The world we live in now.". My poems cover a variety of topics and experiences: my youth, relationships, where I lived and hung out, our special San Diego natural worlds, and holidays. They're all in the rhyming class and many are humorous..

In Gilded, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer returns to the fairytale world with this haunting tale. Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue. Or so everyone believes. When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her... for a price. Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain. Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.
