Excerpt from A Great Discussion of Modern Spiritualism, Between Prof. J. Stanley Grimes and Leo Miller, Esq., At the Melodeon, Boston, Every Evening During the Second Week in March, 1860 I do not wish to be understood as presenting this, here, as an argument upon the question, but, rather, to show the respectable character of the subject which is to engage your attention, and its paramount claims upon every person who starts out upon its investigation. I am aware that Spiritualism, like every other newly developed truth, has met with the most determined opposition. It has been assailed on every side, without mercy, and, too men, the weapons of its opponents have been only ridicule, glaring misrepresentation, and vulgar-minded contempt. But it is too late in the day to use such weapons as these. Spiritualism has become so deeply entrenched in the hearts of thousands that such arguments can no longer influence the wise and intelligent, -none but the ignorant, the prejudiced, and the dishonest. In holding this discussion, I expect to meet, from my friend, a determined opposition; From his long years of experience in the realms of mental philosophy, he is competent to explode Spiritualism, if such a thing be possible. And I would here say to the audience, that should my friend find it necessary to evade my arguments or my facts should he find it necessary to cavil, or throw dust in your eyes, - understand it is not for the want of' ability to meet them, or want of information, but is owing altogether' b' the untenable position he has assumed. Excerpt from Spiritualism: The Open Door to the Unseen Universe: Being Thirty Years of Personal Observation and Experience Concerning Intercourse Between the Material and Spiritual Worlds N 0 other movement which has originated during the past sixty years has exerted so powerful an influence upon contemporary thought as modern Spiritualism has done. No man within the ranks of British Spiritualists can better tell the story of its growth in these islands during the past thirty years than the writer of the following pages; few could tell it as well. Having been intimately associated with him during the period covered by his pen, there is no question in my mind as to the accuracy of his statements, while their illuminating lucidity leaves nothing to be desired. Personal experience in the matters detailed in the ensuing chapters is necessary for correct judgment. My friend possesses such experience, and speaks, con sequently, as one having authority. Himself a business man of repute in his great city, Glasgow, his words are weighty and full worthy of respect. The Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the Scopes Trial and the battle over evolution and creation in America's schools In the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee, became the setting for one of the twentieth century's most contentious courtroom dramas, pitting William Jennings Bryan and the anti-Darwinists against a teacher named John Scopes, represented by Clarence Darrow and the ACLU, in a famous debate over science, religion, and their place in public education. That trial marked the start of a battle that continues to this day-in cities and states throughout the country. Edward Larson's classic Summer for the Gods -- winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History -- is the single most authoritative account of this pivotal event. An afterword assesses the state of the battle between creationism and evolution, and points the way to how it might potentially be resolved.

Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism I am well aware that my scientific friends are some what puzzled to account for what they consider to be my delusion, and believe that it has injuriously affected what ever power I may have once possessed of dealing with the philosophy of Natural History. One of them - Mr. Anton Dohrn - has expressed this plainly. I am informed that, in an article entitled Englische Kritiker und Anti Kritiker des Darwinismus, published in 1861, he has put forth the opinion that Spiritualism and Natural Selection are incompatible, and that my divergence from the views of Mr. Darwin arises from my belief in Spiritualism. He also supposes that in accepting the spiritual doctrines I have been to some extent influenced by clerical and reli gions prejudice. As Mr. Dohrn's views may be those of other scientific friends, I may perhaps be excused for entering into some personal details in reply. This book asks if the nobility could lead the Westernization of Russia in early modern times. Its yardstick is Humanism and the Latin Classics, which dominated education in Europe, but with which Russia's government only flirted, and most in society rejected.
