A FULL half-century has passed away since the work of compiling a genealogy of the Goodrich family was systematically begun. It was first undertaken by Benjamin Douglass Goodrich (No. 687), and carried on until placed in the hands of his son, Rev. Hiram Plummer Goodrich, D.D. (No. 1497), a distinguished Presbyterian minister of St. Louis, Mo., a man of great force of character and especially fitted for the work. He devoted years of patient labor, and was at great expense in the search for information. He crossed the ocean twice in the prosecution of the Avork, visited Goodrich Castle, searched records abroad and at home, and made a very extensive and, it is supposed, a very complete collection of material for the book, bringing the work down to 1861, when he died. During these years of research he was ably assisted by Hon. Aaron Goodrich of St. Paul, Minn., president of the Goodrich Family Association, and who has recently died, and who also visited Goodrich Castle and brought away the views that adorn this memorial, presenting them to the Association.

Excerpt from The Goodrich Family Memorial, Vol. 1: Containing the English History of the Family In the month of October, 1862, this man, Henry B.8 Good rich, was murdered, while on his way to St. Louis. Rev. Hiram P.6 Goodrich of St. Louis also died the same year; and as his only son was said to have enlisted in the Confeder ate army, there seemed to be no one-to whom the mss. Could properly be returned. They were carefully packed, and the package marked Papers belonging the Estate of the late Hiram P. Goodrich of St. Louis, Mo. In care of the Chicago Historical Society, until called for. They were undoubtedly destroyed by the great-fire of October 8 - 9, 1871. What became of the manuscript book, compiled for Henry Goodrich, is unknown; but as it is understood that his family returned to Brownhelm, Ohio, shortly after his death, it is supposed it was taken there. Fortunately, a very full abstract or digest of the St. Louis mss. Was made. On the books of the compiler, which, being at his residence at Oak Park at. The time of the fire, escaped destruction.
