The God of All Comfort is an inspiring manual of faith by Hannah Whitall Smith, who was one of the leading authors of Christian advice in the late nineteenth century. Smith, having lived and witnessed a life of supreme faith to God, writes her account of the principles of the Lord and Jesus Christ. Her aim is to inspire Christians who may be doubting their faith, as well as those who need guidance through crises or struggles in life. With a close reading of the Bible, Whitall Smith is able to demonstrate the sublime comfort and serenity which the Lord God can dispense through His love. Blessed with a gift for words and eloquent turns of phrase, Hannah Whitall Smith places both her faith and her affinity for language front and center in this book. For many years this book has been consulted as a sublime manual of true Christian advice, notable for the greathearted way in which lessons on how to live and take joy as a follower of God are dispensed.

Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... possible needs, and that we may safely rest in Him absolutely and for ever. Most Christians have, I suppose, sung more often than they could count, these words in one of our most familiar hymns-- "Thou, O Christ, art all I want, More than all in Thee I find." But I doubt whether all of us could honestly say that the words have expressed any reality in our own experience. Christ has not been all we want. We have wanted a great many things besides Him. We have wanted fervent feelings about Him, or realisations of His presence with us, or an interior revelation of His love; or else we have demanded satisfactory schemes of doctrine, or successful Christian work, or something of one sort or another, beside Himself, that will constitute a personal claim upon Him. Just Christ Himself, Christ alone, without the addition of any of our experiences concerning Him, has not been enough for us, in spite of all our singing; and we do not even see how it is possible that He could be enough. The Psalmist said in those old days, "My soul, wait thou only upon God: for my expectation is from Him." But now the Christian says, "My soul, wait thou upon my sound doctrines, for my expectation is from them;" or, "My soul, wait thou on my good frames and feelings, or upon my righteous works, or upon my fervent prayers, or upon my earnest striving, for my expectation is from these." To wait upon God only, seems one of the most unsafe things they can do, and to have their expectation from Him alone, like building on the sand. They reach out on every side for something to depend on, and, not until everything else fails, will they put their trust in God alone. George Macdonald says: "We look upon God as our last and feeblest resource. We only go to Him when we have...

Comfort is a word seldom associated with religious faith by those who are not Christians. Doesn't religion make people uncomfortable with its demands? Isn't life more comfortable when we just live the way we want? Who needs to worry about a judgmental God watching our every move? Even the word Jesus is enough to cause people to squirm in their seats. However, for many Christians the words Jesus and comfort are inextricably linked. In her classic work, God of All Comfort, Hannah Whitall Smith describes why faith in the Christian God leads to a comfort and joy that cannot be found elsewhere. Without Christ, life is little more than living through doubt, fear, and anxiety. In her inspirational work, Smith reminds the reader of the reality of God's promises to his people. With Christ, doubt, fear, and anxiety are obsolete feelings. Hanna was raised in a strict Quaker home and was given to morbid introspection that found little relief until her marriage to Robert Piersall Smith in 1851. They were both converted under Plymouth Brethren influence in 1858 and in 1867 had a new experience of faith that propelled them on a speaking tour of the United States and Europe. Their "Higher Christian Life" meetings in England were exceedingly popular, partly because of D. L. Moody's success there. They remained in England due to Robert's declining health and observed the founding of the Keswick Convention in 1874, an outgrowth of their conferences. Trouble followed, however. Robert began to entertain notions of spiritual wifery, was criticized, and eventually claimed to be a Buddhist.Hannah was the author of the spiritual classic, The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life (1875) and later developed ideas on the final restitution of all things, diverted herself into social causes and writing. She produced The Unselfishness of God and How I Discovered It in 1903. A year later she was stricken with arthritis. Although confined to a wheelchair and in much pain, she maintained an optimistic spiritual outlook until her death.
