The question of the order in which the different parts of rhetoric are to be studied must be considered by every teacher with respect to the needs of his pupils. The present arrangement will, it is believed, prove its adaptability to the needs of the great majority of classes; but the chapters of the book are distinct by themselves, each devoted to a separate topic, so that changes in their order may be readily made to suit special conditions. A course in composition is worth much that does not call for regular practice in writing by the student, and writing under the guidance and personal criticism of a competent teacher. The common order is reversed, and the study of words, instead of being put first, is put last, while at the outset attention is centred upon methods of gathering and ordering material. The reason for this should be plain. Composition must begin with ideas. Diction is the very last consideration in the process of constructing an essay it may even be reserved until revision. If words be thrust first upon the attention, the student naturally supposes that words, instead of the ideas behind them, are his raw material. Composition becomes to him wholly an artificial thing. While the discussion of simple, complex, and compound sentences is the province of Grammar, - a subject usually completed before that of Rhetoric is begun, - it has been deemed advisable to include these topics, for the pupil seldom possesses the maturity of mind to comprehend thoroughly the laws of Grammar, even when he undertakes to master the elements of Rhetoric; moreover, his attention has been directed almost exclusively to analytical processes, to the neglect of synthetical; hence, he may be skillful in discovering the relations of words in sentences formed by others, and be but a bungler in giving expression to his own ideas. For a like reason, also, the subject of Concord, which perhaps belongs still more strictly to Grammar, is included; not all of the syntactical arrangements are noticed, only those wherein the grammatical principle receives a special signification from the rhetorical point of view. The Reproductions furnish material for practice upon the principles under discussion. As a means of securing ease of expression, they are of great value; the material for the discourse being furnished, the pupil is thus enabled to concentrate his attention upon the form.
