Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from The Elements of Physical Geography: For the Use of Schools, Academies, and Colleges But the advances, during comparatively recent years, have been so marked that at the earnest request of teachers from all parts of the country the author has prepared a new book, based on the general lines of the old work, but practically rewritten. For convenience, the shape of the new book has been changed to a duodecimo, the size of the maps, however, being retained, by making them occupy the space of two pages, across which inserts are made. In the preparation of the new book the author has endeavored so to proportion the subject matter as to give due prominence to such topics as, in his judgment, would prove of greatest value to the student. In this direction physiography has been treated more fully than in the older book. At the same time, however, he has studiously avoided giving such an-undue prominence to this part of the science as would necessitate the suppression of equally important topics. The influence of geological agencies in giving the earth its present surface features has been fully treated, and yet not so fully as practically to exclude the influences of these features on the climate, and this, in its turn, on vegetable and animal life, especially on the development and civilization of earth's highest type of life, man.
