Excerpt from The Dusty Road The Andersons' house stood near the Schuylkill, and only a few hundred yards from the terminus of a railroad. The wind seemed to make it the object of special attentions; the loose window-frames rattled ominously, the crazy furnaceflue refused to draw; through tiny cracks in the neglected walls the locomotive dust came filtering in, and covered everything with a coat of depressing grey. A sudden gust tore the rickety kitchen door ofi its hinges; and Mrs. Anderson, stand ing over the carpenter who was repairing it so that she could make sure he was working all the time she paid him for and not letting her in for unnecessary extravagance, calculated ruefully that now she would not be able to afford the new dress she had planned to wear to Mrs. Coxe's bridge party. Excerpt from An Old Dusty's Story IT was a dark, stormy night in the latter part of November. The day just closed had been unusually bleak and bitter. The clouds that had drifted about through the day had now formed into one solid mass, and sent their fine, round snow on mountain and val ley. The wind took hold of the snow as it fell and sent it flying hither and thither. By George! I made a mistake in coming down to-night, and wish I was back at the mine. This is a nasty, miserable night, and I shall have a rough time climbing that hill. This exclamation came from W. C. Shepard, the engineer at one of the mines in the hills above. It was pay day, and he had come down to the dirty little mining town to cash his check. This being done and his little bills paid, he was starting back to the mine. Not that he need go alone if he would wait a while, for there were many of the boys down, and miner-like, were filling up on poor whiskey. A steady man was Mr. Shepard, and he had too much respect for himself, and too much native pride and manhood, to drink and act worse than a beast. Excerpt from Prince Dusty: A Story of the Oil Regions Poor Arthur obeyed; and, as he walked slowly toward the only place in the world he could call his home, great tears rolled down his cheeks. When the other children, who were hiding in the bushes, saw them they called out, Cry-baby! Cry-baby! Only little Cynthia ran out and put her arm about his neck and said she was sorry; but Dick pulled her roughly away. Another time when Cynthia asked Arthur to build a house for her dolls, under the roots Of a great tree that had blown down just on the edge of the woods back of the house, he, being an Obliging lit tle soul, consented at once to do so. Under the huge mass of roots and earth they played happily enough at making believe it was a cave, and Cynthia was radiant with delight over the beautiful time they were having. For a little while Arthur experienced the novel feeling of being perfectly happy. Then, all of a sudden, a shower of earth and gravel came rattling down on them from above, and with it came a mocking chorus of Girl-boy Girl-boy Look at the girl-boy playing with dolls and little Cynthia be gan to my over the ruin of her beautiful baby-house. Excerpt from The Big-Town Round-Up The driver of the big car throttled down. Since he had swung away from the dusty road to follow a wagon track across the desert, the speedometer had registered many miles. His eyes searched the ground in front to see whether the track led up the brow of the hill or dipped into the sandy wash. On the breeze there floated to him the faint, insistent bawl of thirsty cattle. The car leaped forward again, climbed the hill, and closed in upon a remuda of horses watched by two wranglers. Excerpt from Dusty Star It was twilight in the badger-hole, and only persons accustomed to odds and ends of daylight could have seen what was going on. Not that it mattered. The greatest fairy tales of all time. The 100 tales collected here throw open wide the gates to the realm of fairyland. Inside are princes and princesses, giants and dwarfs, heroes, heroines, simpletons, rogues, wizards, witches, ogres, trolls, elves, magical artefacts, and all manner of talking birds and beasts. As G. K. Chesterton has observed, fairyland is a place where happiness hangs upon a single thread: “Cinderella may have a dress woven on supernatural looms and blazing with unearthly brilliance; but she must be back when the clock strikes twelve. The king may invite fairies to the christening, but he must invite all the fairies or frightful results will follow. Bluebeard's wife may open all doors but one. A promise is broken to a cat, and the whole world goes wrong… A promise is broken to a yellow dwarf, and the whole world goes wrong.” This is also a world of contradiction and disproportion; where honesty may be a virtue, but so is the ability to tell the most outrageous lies conceivable. Here, the prize for treading on a cat’s tail, is a princess; and the penalty for expressing gratitude to a goblin, is a lifelong curse. In compiling this anthology, we have tried to include as many “tale types” as possible, and as much of the varied landscape of the fairy world—deserts, icefields, enchanted forests, underwater kingdoms—as we could fit in. Our principal sources are the great European collections of fairy tales and folk tales as compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Peter Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault, Joseph Jacobs, and Alexander Afanasyev. But there are tales from further afield as well; from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. We have classified the tales thematically, and spread them evenly across ten chapters: 1) The Classic Characters: Heroes, Heroines, and their Foes 2) Birds and Beasts 3) Little; Big 4) The Ship of Fools 5) Quick Minds and Sharp Wits 6) The Royal Court 7) Into the World: Journeys, Quests, and Adventures 8) Magic and Witchcraft 9) Extraordinary Tales of Extraordinary Things 10) Tales for Winter We hope this structure will aid readers somewhat in their explorations. At the same time, we concur with W. H. Auden, who writes, “the way to read a fairy tale is to throw yourself in.”
