THERE are certain things in life which are too beautiful to be forgotten, such as the love of a mother. Hence we treasure her picture. The love of soldiers who sacrificed themselves for their country is likewise too beautiful to be forgotten, hence we revere their memory on Memorial Day. But the greatest blessing which ever came to this earth was the visitation of the Son of God in the form and habit of man. His life, above all lives, is too beautiful to be forgotten, hence we treasure the divinity of His Words in Sacred Scripture, and the charity of His Deeds in our daily actions. Aeterna Press

This five-scene chancel drama tells the story of Jesus' arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection through the eyes of the women who knew Jesus and were influenced by his life and death. From the Upper Room through Golgotha and the Empty Tomb, we hear the passionate feelings the Master stirred in these women who are much like us. The scenes can be presented separately for midweek services or in a single 90-minute performance. (Performance time for each individual scene is approximately 15-20 minutes.) Since no setting is necessary and costumes and props are simple, this play is easy to stage for congregations of all sizes. There are roles for nine women, but for smaller groups, some performers could portray more than one role. There are also small roles for four men. Biblical women featured are: - Mary (mother of Jesus) - Mary Magdalene - Mary (mother of James and Joseph) - Salome (mother of James and John) - Mary (mother of Mark) - Mary (sister of Martha) - Martha - Claudia (Pilate's wife) - Julia (Claudia's maid) Marguerite D. Brown was a native of New York who led an active life in the Lutheran church, serving in a variety of lay leadership roles in numerous congregations. Her children's stories appeared in several publications, and she wrote and directed plays for church programs and other groups.

Nothing connected with the Passion and Death of Christ was purely accidental. And although Our Saviour was unquestionably the central figure of Calvary, many other persons - by God's Providence - took part in the living drama of the first Good Friday. These persons too provide instruction for our own lives.

Born and educated in Dublin, Ireland, William Butler Yeats discovered early in his literary career a fascination with Irish folklore and the occult. Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, Yeats produced a vast collection of stories, songs, and poetry of Ireland's historical and legendary past. These writings helped secure for Yeats recognition as a leading proponent of Irish nationalism and Irish cultural independence. His close friend, Ezra Pound, exposed the playwright to the symbolic theatre genre of Japanese Noh drama, prompting him to write a series of four plays in this style. The final play in this series, which were first printed together in "Four Plays for Dancers," was "Calvary." With Ireland in the midst of a hunger-strike, the story of the self-sacrificing Christ was particularly relevant. In the story, Christ dreams of his passion, only to find that he is still rejected and is essentially alone, as so many heroic figures must find themselves.
