Ananda K. Coomaraswamy (1877-1947) was a pioneer in Indian art history and in the cultural confrontation of East and West. A scholar in the tradition of the great Indian grammarians and philosophers, an art historian convinced that the ultimate value of art transcends history, and a social thinker influenced by William Morris, Coomaraswamy was a unique figure whose works provide virtually a complete education in themselves. Finding a universal tradition in past cultures ranging from the Hellenic and Christian to the Indian, Islamic, and Chinese, he collated his ideas and symbols of ancient wisdom into the sometimes complex, always rewarding pattern of essays. The Door in the Sky is a collection of the author's writings on myth drawn from his Metaphysics and Traditional Art and Symbolism, both originally published in Bollingen Series. These essays were written while Coomaraswamy was curator in the department of Asiatic Art of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where he built the first large collection of Indian art in the United States.

Maya San Lucas had been lost in her dreamworld for the better part of five years. Desparia was just a fantasy world for her to explore during stretches of boredom at school and at home. Going to that world let her have adventures, exploring secret locations, and searching through towns and cities for loot to come away with. The life of a thief was so much more exciting than high school, especially with no friends to speak of. But then the three women she met outside the tavern arrived in front of that high school. The dreamworld that she had thought was only in her head suddenly proved to be completely real. More than that, they recognized her, knew her and remembered her being there with them as they traveled through the fortress of the emperor. The only question that was fresh on their mind was how Maya had made it to that strange world ahead of them. What they should have been wondering was how they were going to get home. More than that, what would they do when their enemies came to Earth hunting for them. Tina and Serena Montegra came into the service of The Great Tree at a young age. Growing up under the tutelage of their father, they took to her teachings well and easily. But as the emperor's troopers came to their doorstep, they left nothing but devastation in their wake. Only by the blessings of their goddess, and the training they had gotten before it, were they able to survive. Unfortunately, when you're twelve, there's not much you can do against the force of the empire.

Architectural paintings in watercolour from the Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in northern Nepal - the subject of a major travelling exhibition - are presented here in all their beauty and originality. The artist's work on Mustang began in 1992 and continuted over six years. This close association has allowed him to present the essence and heart of Mustang's architecture and man-made structures. Within this forbidding country, dry, dramatic and overwhelming in scale, humans have been able to create islands of habitation through the careful control of water. The structures built to maintain these islands, and to thrive, are the subjects of the paintings. Virtually every built object in Mustang bears the signs of ritual activity: from pre-historic hand-dug cave systems to ruined hilltop castles, from densely clustered villages to isolated temples, from propitiatory stacks of yak horns to the sophisticated cosmology of the chortens. This book presents in colour 43 paintings by Robert Powell.

At the end of the twenty-first century, Earth is under the control of a single intelligence, the apparently benign One True. Mars, meanwhile, is slowly terraforming, and the human settlers there are still free of One True's control...but they need a pressure suits to survive outside, and it will be a century or more before the planet's fit for terrestrial life. Terpsichore Murray is growing up on Mars. She wants to quit school and become, like her father, an ecoprospector. He has other ideas: he wants her to stay in school. He does want her along on his next long trip but only to conduct a group of younger kids from the highlands at Mars's equator back to school in Wells City. What happens next will change Terpsichore, will change Mars, and will open the door to a new chapter in the history of intelligent beings in the solar system . . . all of them. Modern history unearthed as a boy becomes an innocent victim of corruption in Bolivia's crime world, where the power of family is both a prison and a means of survival. It's 1999 in Bolivia and Francisco's life consists of school, soccer, and trying to find space for himself in his family's cramped yet boisterous home. But when his father is arrested on false charges and sent to prison by a corrupt system that targets the uneducated, the poor, and the indigenous majority, Francisco and his sister are left with no choice: They must move into prison with their father. There, they find a world unlike anything they've ever known, where everything—a door, a mattress, protection from other inmates—has its price. Prison life is dirty, dire, and dehumanizing. With their lives upended, Francisco faces an impossible decision: Break up the family and take his sister to their grandparents in the Andean highlands, fleeing the city and the future within his grasp, or remain together in the increasingly dangerous prison. Pulled between two undesirable options, Francisco must confront everything he once believed about the world and his place within it. In this heart-wrenching novel, Melanie Crowder sheds light on a little-known era of modern South American history—where injustice still looms large—and proves that hope can be found, even in the most desperate places. Perfect for fans of Ruta Sepetys, Matt de la Pena, and Jacqueline Woodson.
