Each volume in this series on the work of Ruqaiya Hasan† comprises a selection of unpublished and previously published papers accompanied by a preface developing the theme and explaining the background. Ruqaiya Hasan taught and held visiting positions at various universities in England, America and Australia. Her last appointment was at Macquarie University, Australia, from where she retired as Emeritus Professor in 1994. Throughout her career she has researched and published widely in the areas of stylistics, culture, context and text, lexicogrammar and semantic variation. The latter involved the devising of extensive semantic system networks for the analysis of meaning in naturally occurring dialogues. Her work continues to exert a powerful influence on researchers and educators working on theories of social and linguistic development.

This work comprises a collection of the writings of Ruqaiya Hasan, an influential figure in the systemic functional linguistic learning school. It discusses the relation between text and context and the realization of context in language; the 'network', which is outlined as analytic tool which can be applied at two strata of language, the lexico-grammatical and the semantic; as well as aspects of the social structure that are implicated in the way cultures and subcultures express themselves.

Natural use of language is orderly - a fact that gets camouflaged by what has often been described as 'the messiness of language in use' but which, in fact, often arises from the permeability of social contexts: life's business is not compartmentalised. The chapters of this volume explore the two axes known as texture and structure along which the orderliness of language in use makes itself felt. These properties bear a close relation to the context of situation in which a discourse comes to life. The complex relationship of the structure potential of a variety to its underlying context is discussed and exemplified in the description of particular types of economic transactions, of stories for children, and of advertisements. The relationship of texture to the structure of the text is discussed: texture is a condition for the creation and realisation of textual structures. In this way, texts can be seen as the record of their own cultural context represented semiotically.

Language, as Whorf said, the the best show man puts on. And perhaps the most amazing performance in this repertory is verbal art, which thanks to the power of ordinary language, peoples the world with beings who although they do not exist hold a many-angled mirror to human life. They live, creating histories which possess deeper reality than our own real existence in society: through these histories is distilled human experience, made potent as an extended metaphor for the essential human condition. The deepest level of meaning, the themes in verbal art, relate to human social existence - its dilemmas and its delights, thus bearing witness to its socio-semiotic origins. All of this is achieved through a patterning of the patterns of language. Through the linguistic analysis of the various genres of literature, the chapters of this volume offer a social semiotic theory for engaging meaningfully with literature. The book should interest lovers and teachers of literature.

The sociolinguistic turn of the 1960's has been remarkably successful: variability of language is no longer an issue open to debate. But studies of variation have by and large been restricted to the level of expression. This volume makes a contribution to a neglected area in sociolinguistics, namely variation at the level of meaning, i.e., semantic variation. The chapters in this volume discuss the results of an empirical research strongly supporting the view that systematic variation in the choice of semantic elements occurs across different social strata: mothers and their young children less than four years old showed a highly consistent, statistically significant, orientation to distinct styles of meaning, which correlated with their social positioning. The comparison of kindergarten teachers' ways of meaning with those of mothers', not surprisingly, reveal that teacher talk is an exaggerated version of middle class mothers' talk. Findings of this research are relevant to any serious discourse about equitable education.

This volume focuses on the relation between theory and description by examining aspects of transitivity in different languages. Transitivity — or case grammar, to use the popular term — has always occupied a centre-stage position in linguistics, not least because of its supposedly privileged relation to states of affairs in the real world. Using a systemic functional perspective, the ten papers in this volume make a contribution to this scholarship by focusing on the transitivity patterns in language as the expression of the experiential metafunction. Through a study of different languages — English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Chinese and Pitjantjatjara — the contributors provide functional descriptions of the various categories of process, their participants and circumstances, including phenomena such as di-transitivity, causativity, the get-passive, etc. With the relation between theories and descriptions running through the ten chapters of this volume as sometimes an overt and sometimes a covert theme, the chapters point to the nature of the linguistic fact which is linked ineluctably on the one hand to the nature of the theory and on the other to the speakers’ experience of the world in which they live. The majority of papers included in the volume derive from the 19th International Systemic Functional Congress at Macquarie University.
