Excerpt from The Church at Home and Abroad, 1896, Vol. 20 A terrible tornado swept across the city of St.' Louis, Mo., on the evening of May 27, detailed and illustrated accounts of which have doubtless reached all our read ers. The destruction of property and of life was appalling beyond all precedent in the history of our country. The adjacent city of East St. Louis, on the east side of the river, suffered no less severely. The deaths in the two cities are reckoned by hundreds; the value of property destroyed was many millions of dollars - not relieved e, to the losers, as in losses by fire, by insur ance. A calamity so directly from the hand of God, without human responsibility or blame, appeals peculiarly to the hearts of countrymen and Christian brethren. One phase of this appeal is emphasized to our readers, and to all Presbyterians by the facts stated in the following extract from an appeal to our Church from three of her eminent pastors in St. Louis, viz., Drs. Niccolls, Martin and Brookes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ...we have the church building.... Everything is high here, and the building will cost from 81500 to $2000; but if necessary I can lend a helping hand. The work on my hands is great, but for a few weeks I could use hammer and saw if compelled to. It is all the Lord's work, and consecrated labor is his work whether with hands, heart or brain. Only secure us the material and I will secure the men in some way, though I do not want to give any time to manual labor that should be given to human hearts. The writer of this brave and tender letter has long been known to the writer of this note. Dr. Kendall says of him, " I know him well. I take him to be, as he seems to be, a quiet yet brave and devoted man." He did not expect us to print his letter, and we do not print his name. But have we not readers who would like to make such an investment as his letter suggests? This is the way to do it: send your money to Rev. E. N. White, D.D., 53 Fifth Avenue, New York, for the Manse Fund. If you wish to have your gift applied to this case, refer Dr. White to this page, and ask him to communicate with us. We will give him the name and address. We will also give them to any of the Lord's stewards who may wish to correspond directly with a fellow servant on such a home-foreign mission field. Rev. M. F. Williams, M.D., writes from Muscogee, Ind. Ter., giving account of a trip to old Dwight mission in company with Rev. A. G. Evans. The drive was a delightful one "over the prairies clothed with a rank growth of grass, over hills dignified in that prairie country by the name of mountains, through river bottoms now very muddy, some of the mud-holes so deep that we drove in with some doubt whether we should get through safely." They crossed the...

There are now nine vacancies in our work and if we are allowed to take up only a very little new work there are at least three new fields which must be supplied or lost by March. IOWA. Rev. T. 8. Bailey, Superintendent: --I have devoted a good deal of time to special efforts to stir up the churches to make larger contributions to the Board, and not without some success. Glidden goes from about $10 up to $60; Tranquility from $8 to $77.75; Boone has paid over $45, and has $60 or more in addition subscribed. The personal contribution of C. J. Stockdalc is virtually a bequest from his dying wife. So far as the general work is concerned, we have a good deal of encouragement, but our work is suffering in many places because of the necessary cutting down on the part of the Board. We are still pushing for self-support on the part of our churches with all our might. I have never done so much traveling and so much hard work in one quarter as during the last, in trying to push the grouping of churches. There are evidences of the presence of God's Spirit in many of our weak churches. We have two evangelists in the State, supported by the Presbyteries in which they labor, namely, Rev. A. R. Bickenback in Cedar Rapids Presbytery, and Rev. H. C. Keeley, now laboring in I lie bounds of Fort Dodge Presbytery, or more properly the Presbyteries of Fort Dodge and Sioux City, as now arranged. Our Bohemian teork in Cedar Rapids is starting out under quite favorable auspices. The new minister, seems to have been very warmly received. I have great hopes that this will prove the beginning of bet ter days for this class of our people. The Indian Mission house at Tama city is now completed and Miss...

While working here he felt a call to preach the gospel to his fellow countrymen, and was received by the presbytery, and with other members of the mission I helped to give him his theological education, Dr. W. A. P. Martin giving him instruction in exegesis. He has a congregation of upwards of one hundred and twenty-four church members. On a recent Sabbath he paid a handsome tribute to the memory of the late Rev. H. V. Rankin, formerly of Ningpo. He spoke of his fidelity in his preaching, of his inviting the school-boys to his house to talk with them, and of the time when he (Mr. Bau) was under conviction and tried to shun Mr. Rankin's faithful talks; but he sought him out, and would not give him up till he had brought him to Christ. It is many years since this faithful missionary slept in his lonely grave on the Shantung promontory, overlooking the sea. Though he has ceased from his labors, the work has gone on, and the seed sown in that school-boy's heart has borne fruit. For more than a quarter of a century has Mr. Bau been a faithful preacher of the gospel--the first to get a foothold in the great city of Soochow and other places, and for many years the pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Shanghai. Form OF Bequest.--I give, devise and bequeath unto " The Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States Of America" the sum of--dollars, to be expended for the appropriate objects of said corporation. The corporate name is "The Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America." Letters relating to...

Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...mean and disreputable village" have made a mistake. In the Bible it is never called a village, but always a city, and Dr. Merrill, in his book, gives pretty strong reasons for thinking that it was " no mean city." At any rate, now, the three young men who travelled with me agreed with me in thinking it as handsome and pleasant a town as we saw in all Palestine. After our tents had been pitched in a field just outside the city, and we had rested a while and eaten our supper, we took a walk to the top of the hill north of the city, and found the view from that high point as beautiful as the books of travel had all described it--as beautiful, I think, as any landscape I ever looked upon. Looking west, we could see the shore, and could look far off upon the great sea, in which the sun had just set, leaving the mild twilight upon it and the land; looking a little east of north, we saw the white top of Hermon, at that season as white as Mont Blanc and towering upward as sublimely; eastward we looked across the Jordan valley to the stern, rocky mountains of Moab, and southward, pretty Nazareth lay at our feet, and beyond it Tabor and Gilboa and Little Hermon rising out of the great plain of Esdraelon. Ever since I enjoyed that twilight view, it has been a comfort to me to know that Jesus, in his boyhood and his youth, had his home where he could so easily and so often walk to that mountain-top and enjoy that charming scenery. If perhaps he worked too hard on weekdays and was too tired to go up for that view after his frugal supper, I cannot help thinking that on Sabbaths, after the synagogue service, he might take the roll of Scriptures--I guess Joseph and Mary had one--and go up to some quiet spot there to study them. May we not...
