Hi folks, I'm C.D. and if my writing sells you'll find out what C.D. stands for, because I put myself in the book and I don't come along as more than C.D. until a future book. Now I'm new at this writing business and before starting to write I was setting around one day, after retiring, and thinking, now what do I do with myself ? I could go back to work, but I was laid off from my last job and I really don't won't to, not for someone else anyway. Even if someone would hire me at 66 which is unlikely. Well, To make a long story a bit shorter. I racked my brain on what to do with myself and came up with writing then writing fiction, not much research in that, then came up with putting all my friends in it, whether alive or not with us any longer also family members most of which are pushing up daises ! which makes for good ghosts ! I do hope you buy it and enjoy it. If not maybe I'll go back to work after all. Yours truly C.D. P.S. I plan on giving most if not all of the money made by me on this to charity, or even forming a charity the book profits would go strait into, but of course thats to worry about after I sell some books. 1649. The year Edinburgh burned. Scotland was cursed by witches and in 1649, the witch panic was at its peak. No-one was safe from the executioner's flames. Below the imposing behemoth of Edinburgh castle, nineteen year old Nessie Macleod is forced to watch her mother, Isabelle, burn to death for witchcraft. Her mother's crime stains her more than the ashes that scatter across the Esplanade. Shunned by Edinburgh's townsfolk, she's also hounded by the witch pricker, John Brodie. Brodie killed her mother and now he's coming for her. The daughter of a witch is always a witch. When old Annie Dickson is accused of cursing the flescher's pigs through witchcraft, she suffers for days at Brodie's hands before betraying three women and starting a witch hunt that sees one woman killed and another executed before the baying town. Nessie is lured to Greyfriars Kirkyard, where she's haunted by the ghosts of the women burned for witchcraft. They want revenge on Brodie and his men. Nessie learns her grandmother was executed during the North Berwick witch trials in 1597 for conspiring to kill King James VI. She left behind everything Nessie needs to stop Brodie and lay the witches' ghosts to rest. But using objects to harm people is witchcraft and there's only one penalty the courts will impose: Death. "Never wish for the flames."

Confessing to "Familiarity with the Devils." Mary Johnson, a servant, was executed by Connecticut officials in 1648. A wealthy Boston widow, Ann Hibbens, was hanged in 1656 for casting spells on her neighbors. In 1662, Ann Cole was "taken with very strange Fits," and fueled an outbreak of witchcraft accusations in Hartford a generation before the notorious events in Salem took place. The witch-hunting hysteria that seized New England in the late seventeenth century still haunts us today. Why were these and other women likely witches? Why were certain people vulnerable to accusations of witchcraft and possession? In this fascinating work, Professor Carol Karlsen of the University of Michigan draws a compelling, richly detailed portrait of the women who were persecuted as witches. And in what Kirkus Reviews calls "an enlightening contribution to U.S. historical studies." The Devil in the Shape of a Woman gives us an unforgettable look at a society in transition, where fears and witch hunts were manifestations of much deeper sexual, religious, and economic tensions.
