The book, which relates the misadventures of one "Lewis Romayne", is noted for its anti-Catholic lens. Romayne returns to his Yorkshire home. Even in his own home, the dying screams of the young man he killed follow him. Romayne finally leaves for London to visit his old friend Lord Loring. Excerpt: "THE doctors could do no more for the Dowager Lady Berrick. When the medical advisers of a lady who has reached seventy years of age recommend the mild climate of the South of France, they mean in plain language that they have arrived at the end of their resources. Foreword by Eugene Sedeno. Black Robe: The Kempo/Kajukenbo Connection is the story of Hawaiian martial artist David Tavares and his life long journey in the Kempo system. The book details the origins of David's instructor, Professor Walter L.N. Godin, and the Kajukenbo technique. The book also examines the nearly six decade long unsolved murder mystery of Walter Godin's instructor, Professor Joe Emperado, presenting historical police reports and public witness statements to give a better understanding of that fateful day. The book highlights the other four co-founders of the Kajukenbo system (and explores a lost legacy of a sixth founder) who played an important role in starting and developing Kajukenbo, giving a bit more insight into these men's martial arts legacies and forever keeping their memories alive. The final chapter of this book shows illustrated self-defense techniques from Kempo & Kajukenbo practitioners from Hawaii as well as the U.S mainland. Over 100 historical images and training diagrams included. A must read for any artist who wants to know the untold history of Kempo & Kajukenbo. Kajukenbo is a hybrid martial art from Hawaii. The name 'Kajukenbo' is a combination of the various arts from which its style is derived: KA for Karate, JU for Judo and Jujutsu, KEN for Kenpo and BO for Boxing.

Excerpt from The Black Robe: A Novel I had known him long enough not to take offense at his reminding me, in this considerate way, that I Was a poor man. The proposed change of scene tempted me. What did I care for the Channel passage? Besides, there was the irresistible attraction of getting away from home. The end of it was that I accepted Ro mayne's invitation. Rengetsu (1791-1875), whose name translates as Lotus Moon, was a Japanese Buddhist nun whose tragic life inspired extraordinary creativity. One of a very few successful female artists in nineteenth-century Japan, Rengetsu was primarily a poet and calligrapher, but also excelled in pottery and scroll painting. Her idiosyncratic personal aesthetic attracted an enormous following in her own lifetime and was imitated by many of her admirers. Black Robe, White Mist presents contemplative works on paper and clay inscribed with Rengetsu's elegant poetry and understated calligraphy, reflecting the beauty of the imperfect and unconventional. A number of distinguished contributors share their knowledge of and enthusiasm for Rengetsu's poetry and art. Melanie Eastburn is assistant curator of Asian art at the National Gallery of Australia. Other contributors include Chiaki Ajioka, Lucie Folan, Patricia J. Graham, Robyn Maxwell, Meher McArthur, Sandra Sheckter, John Stevens, and Saymi Takahashi.

From the author of The Woman in White: In nineteenth-century England, a man’s hard-earned happiness is threatened by a priest who covets his inheritance . . . Lewis Romayne has just returned to Vange Abbey, his home in England, after a traumatic experience in France that still haunts him. Trying to shake his memories of a fatal duel, Romayne visits London, where he meets and falls in love with his future bride. But he soon finds himself the object of one man’s obsession. Father Benwell, a priest, is determined to convert Romayne to the Catholic faith in order to regain the abbey, the latter man’s home, which once belonged to the church. Benwell will do anything to accomplish his goal—even sabotage Romayne’s new marriage by exposing a hidden scandal. As this riveting drama unfolds, Romayne must finally decide who is truly entitled to his heart, his soul, and his property.
