Excerpt from The Bible as English Literature This book springs from a course of study which I have offered for several years at Harvard University in the Department of English. In this course my object has been to make students as familiar as possible with the English Bible, and to throw light on its literary forms by bringing together facts from the history of its sources and from the history of the translation into English. For the latter purpose I have drawn freely on the larger results of the great school of learning which is commonly known as the Higher Criticism. This is in itself, as has often been pointed out, merely a critical study of the various books of both Old and New Testaments from the historical point of view; it arrives at its results by a faithful comparison of the various parts with each other, and by bringing to bear on them all pertinent facts from the monuments and other external sources of history. Excerpt from The Bible in English Literature The subject is not casual - it is nothing incidental, nor even wholly explicit. It is implicit in the pro foundest sense - it is close to the beating of the heart, and the flowing of the blood. For we believe that English-speaking people possess the Bible in this way, not merely in outward ways and customs, but in the blood. The author can only hope that he has suc ceeded to some extent in making this clear as respects English literature. Excerpt from The English Bible It is the Opinion of those especially interested in the study of the English Bible that there is at present something of an awakened interest in the subject. In some of our colleges credit is given for systematic work done in the Sunday school. In many institutions courses are given in biblical literature where the sub ject is presented in its historical development. There are a number of textbooks which cover this ground in a satisfactory manner. This book recognizes at the outset the existing condition that the great majority of our young people are lacking in a proper knowledge of the Bible itself. About half of the work, therefore, is devoted to a direct study of the narratives in order to supply a foundation for the literary study with Which the other half is concerned. It is, hoped that it may be useful to students in schools, colleges, and Sunday schools; and to divinity students who may need to extend their knowledge of the Bible in this direction. Excerpt from The Greatest English Classic: A Study of the King James Version of the Bible and Its Influence on Life and Literature The reception accorded the lectures at the time of their public delivery, and the discussion which ensued upon some of the points raised, encourage the hope that they may be more widely useful. It is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Hooper, director of the Institute, whatever credit the work may merit. Certainly it would not have been undertaken without his kindly urgency. Excerpt from A Book About the English Bible Tms volume is simply what its title indicates, A Book about the English Bible. It has grown out of a series of lectures delivered to students in the University of Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to give a brief account of the English Bible, its immediate sources and their contents, their literary background and surroundings, the forms and characteristics of the constituent books and their relation to each other. To the chapters, in which these subjects are suggested, rather than discussed, have been added several others containing a short history of the translation of the Bible into English, from Saxon times to our own day. Attention is called to the differences between the commonly used English versions as regards contents and translation, and to the reasons for the differences. Excerpt from The Bible as Literature This book is an attempt to present the results of modern criticism of the Bible in condensed and simplified form adapted for the use of the older pupils in our Sunday Schools. To confine the consideration of all the books of the Bible within so narrow a Space has been an exacting task. The writer has been forced to omit valuable material, and even what has been dealt with gives in outline merely the more significant facts and theories. For this reason some dogmatism colors the treatment of the Biblical books, which must not be taken as a mark of final conclusions, for many questions are still Open. The judgments here offered regarding doubtful matters are reasonable and moderate and are founded upon the agree ment of scholarly experts. Excerpt from The Psalter of the Great Bible of 1539: A Landmark in English Literature The Greek is pre-eminent as having been the first in date; and with this fact is connected its high dis tinction as an external independent witness of the state of the Hebrew text before Christianity. Down to the sixteenth century, this translation had almost the honours of an original. The Latin is pre-eminent as being the first version that was made in the atmosphere and light of the Christian faith. It was translated from the Greek alone, and it has no immediate contact with the Hebrew. Distant though it is from the original by a second remove, mechanical as it seems when verbally scanned, it has nevertheless within it a spring of emotion which is original in itself, radiating the warmth of primitive Christianity.
