The Berger Picard is a breed of herding dog that originates from France. The breed is named after the Picardie region of France where they were developed. The Berger Picard is also commonly known as the 'Picardy Shepherd, ' the 'Picardy Sheepdog, ' and simply as the 'Picard.' The breed nearly went extinct during World War 1 and World War 2 and is still considered to be a rare breed of dog. Like most working dogs, the Berger Picard has a well-muscled and medium-sized body. Due to the breed being developed to work, the Berger Picard is a highly energetic breed. It is important to make sure that you provide your Berger Picard with high levels of exercise as an abundance of energy and boredom will lead it to develop destructive behaviors. The breed is known to be highly intelligent and has become an increasingly popular choice for dog sports, obedience and herding competitions. As a whole the Berger Picard is known to be people-orientated, loyal, affectionate, playful and friendly. Due to the breed's herding history it is important to make sure that you properly socialize your Berger Picard to avoid it accidentally 'herding' small children and other household pets. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. The Barbet is considered to be a rare breed and can only be officially registered in France, Holland, Germany, Sweden and Canada. However the breed is gaining popularity as a household pet, mainly in Scandinavian countries and North America, due to its flexibility and affectionate personality. The breed comes in a variety of colorations but it is most common for a Barbet's coat to be black, white and black or brown. The Bichon Frise is a small breed of dog that is part of the 'Bichon' typing. The 'Bichon' typing is believed to have gotten its name from the French word 'Barbichon' which translates to 'small poodle.' The breed is a member of the 'Non-Sporting Group' of dog breeds in the United States and a member of the 'Toy Dog Group' in the United Kingdom. The Bichon Frise descends from the Barbet, Water Spaniels and the Poodle. The Bichon Frise, like the other dogs within the 'Bichon' typing, originally comes from the Mediterranean and was taken to France in the early 14th century by sailors. The breed quickly became popular with the nobility of Europe: most notably King Francis the 1st of France and King Henry the 3rd of England. As a whole the breed is known to be playful, affectionate, friendly and gentle. They are known to love human company and will often be highly demanding of their owner's attention. The breed is also known to be highly sociable and will easily get along with strangers, small children and other household pets. The modern Basenji is a breed of hunting dog that originates from Africa. However the Basenji is believed to be a descendant from Chinese and southeast Asian wolves. The Basenji does not have a traditional bark but rather a unique yodeling sound. The yodeling, rather than barking, sound is due to the breeds strangely shaped larynx. This trait has given the Basenji the nickname of the 'soundless dog.' Traditionally the breed was bred for its independent thinking, which makes the Basenji incredibly hard to train. It is possible to train a Basenji to an extent, but it is common for a Basenji to only obey humans when it feels like it. It is important to note that Basenji do not do well in homes with small children or other small animals due to their hunting history. Basenji will commonly chase cats and other small pets around the household - especially if they have not been exercised properly. To minimize the chance of your Basenji 'hunting' your other pets it is important to socialize it with other animals during the Basenji's puppyhood. The breed is highly energetic and is likely to develop destructive behaviors if they are not exercised thoroughly on a regular basis. The breed is highly affectionate and will want to spend its time relaxing with its family unit - the Basenji is prone to following people from room to room. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. The Briard is a breed of herding dog that originates from France. The breed is thought to be a mixture of the Barbet and the Beauceron. The Briard was only standardized after a dog show, in Paris, in the late 1800s. Traditionally the Briard was bred and developed to both guard and herd flocks of sheep without the presence of the farmer. Most sheepdogs either herd or guard flocks. Breeds that herd normally have small, compact and agile builds to allow them to efficiently, and quickly, herd sheep. Guard dogs normally have larger, heavier and more athletic builds to allow them to adequately defend the flocks of sheep. The Briard is a mixture of both a herding and guarding dog: it has a compact and athletic body while not being small. The Briard is also known to be highly intelligent and was more than capable of minding a flock of sheep alone. The French military employed the Briard was a sentry, messenger and a search and rescue dog during World War 1. The Briard was actually used to such an extent that the breed nearly went extinct! In modern times the Briard is still used as a military dog, a police dog, a search and rescue dog and as a domesticated companion dog. The Briard has a characteristic coarse, long and shaggy overcoat and fine and dense undercoat that sits tightly to the dog's stomach. As a whole, the breed is known to be extremely intelligent, empathetic, loyal and loving. They have been a popular choice for family pets and therapy dogs due to their kind natures. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
