“Kindl inventively meshes classical myths, archeological findings and imaginative speculation in an intriguing tale full of mystery and emotion.” —Publishers Weekly Last night I saw my sister, who is dead. She stood at the end of a long corridor, weeping. “Can it really be you, Ariadne, come back after all this time?” I whispered. She did not answer, but began slowly to sink through the floor. Princess Xenodice is content to spend her days tending to the animals in the royal menagerie, haunting the workshop of a beautiful young man named Icarus, and visiting her brother who lives in the Labyrinth. Her safe and privileged world, however, has ominous cracks underfoot. Soon battles for power and revenge threaten everything Xenodice loves. Betrayals from both within and without her family lead to a series of tragedies that Xenodice struggles to avert. From the deepest layer of the Labyrinth under the Royal Palace to the topmost floor of the prison tower, this enthralling version of the myth of the maze and the Minotaur by master storyteller Patrice Kindl is filled with the marvelous and the strange. “It’s Xenodice’s strong, appealing character that will get readers through the maze; her first-person narration brings the ancient setting vividly to life with rich detail and timeless emotions—sibling rivalry, heart-pounding crushes, moral outrage, and the pain of family secrets. An intriguing . . . blend of history, myth, and fiction.” —Booklist “Readers who know the legend will enjoy the parallels and contrasts that occur throughout, but the strong storytelling lets Xenodice’s tale stand on its own, as well.” —School Library Journal

A man and his guide enter the vast, labyrinthine Mammoth Cave. However, this is not an advert for Visit Kentucky, so you can predict the next plot line. The man loses his guide. Then his torch goes out. Lost in the pitch dark, he hears "non-human" footsteps approaching... 'The Beast in the Cave' was written by HP Lovecraft when he was 14 years old. The ending belies his age, though, with a shocking twist to make spines tingle. The story has echoes of the Greek myth 'Theseus and the Minotaur', set in the Labyrinth of Crete, but will also appeal to fans of JRR Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author famed for his horror and fantasy fiction. Born in Rhode Island, he became a pioneer of ‘cosmic horror’, conjuring up the lore of supernatural creatures who exist beyond our understanding. His best-known stories include "The Call of Cthulhu", "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Colour Out of Space". While he was a mainstay of pulp magazines, Lovecraft never achieved wider literary recognition in his lifetime. But his posthumous influence has been profound. It can be found in everything from the fiction of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman to the HBO series "Lovecraft Country".

In a long sequence of prose poems, questionnaires, and standardized tests, The Boy in the Labyrinth interrogates the language of autism and the language barriers between parents, their children, and the fractured medium of science and school. Structured as a Greek play, the book opens with a parents' earnest quest for answers, understanding, and doubt. Each section of the Three Act is highlighted by "Autism Spectrum Questionnaires" which are in dialogue with and in opposition to what the parent perceives to be their relationship with their child. Interspersed throughout each section are sequences of standardized test questions akin to those one would find in grade school, except these questions unravel into deeper mysteries. The depth of the book is told in a series of episodic prose poems that parallel the parable of Theseus and the Minotaur. In these short clips of montage the unnamed "boy" explores his world and the world of perception, all the while hearing the rumblings of the Minotaur somewhere in the heart of an immense Labyrinth. Through the medium of this allusion, de la Paz meditates on failures, foundering, and the possibility of finding one's way.
