Excerpt from The Banker's Common-Place Book The Profits to a Bank from its Bank Notes and Deposits. - A bank which should possess a capital limited to a hundred thousand dollars, could lend only a hundred thousand dollars, if it possessed neither bank notes of its own creation, nor deposits of other persons' money hence, such a bank could gain but six per cent. The year on its capital, if its loans were made on securities that would mature ixl sixty days, or but seven per cent. If its loans were made on longer securities. But from this six or seven per cent. Would have to be deducted, the salaries of the bank's officers, the rent of its banking house, its stationery, el, taxes, &c., so as to leave of its income, to be divided among its stockholders, not more than from three to five per cent. The year, a dividend smaller than the productiveness of capital in other occupations, and, consequent ly, destructive to the continuance of banking. Excerpt from Practical Banking: New and Enlarged In the preface to the first edition was fully set forth the origin of this work; As there explained, a consider able portion Of Part I, relating to Banks of Deposit and Discounts, was derived from the Bankers' Commonplace Book, a work written by an experienced bank officer and possessing great merit. Since his day, however, many changes have been introduced into banking, and his work, though still worth reading, does not adequately deal with the conditions that now confront the banking world. So, nearly all taken from that work has been omitted, except a part of the chapter relating to the duties of the president and a few paragraphs pertaining to directors. Excerpt from Practical Banking An explanation is needful concerning the origin and composition of this work. For several years letters have been received-by the publisher-of the Banker's Magazine inquiring whether a work like this existed. Other letters of inquiry have been received concerning the Banker's common-place Book, which, after the issue of several edi tions, went out of print. For a long period I have been trying to find an opportunity to embody the more important matters contained in that work, with additional information in a new form, but the desire to complete other undertakings resulted in the postponement of this until after my connection with the School of Finance and Economy in the University of Pennsylvania, when the need of the book for the purpose of instruction was so great that the prepara tion of it was begun. The work, therefore, has been prepared to serve a double purpose; first, for those in banks, and elsewhere, who wish to learn how the business of banking is conducted; and, secondly, for use as a text book for the students whom it is my pleasure to instruct. I have not aimed to produce an original work, but the best for the purposes mentioned. Accordingly, I have profited by the labor of others to a considerable extent, and it is fitting that I should acknowledge my indebtedness to them. In 1858 James S. Gibbons, Cashier of the Ocean Bank of New York, wrote a work on T fie Banks of New York, which ran through ten editions, and merited the favorable reception accorded to it. Changes, however, have occurred in banking methods since he wrote, while the style of Mr. Gibbons' work, though very lively and appropriate for the gen eral reader, is not suitable for a class-room book. Nevertheless, I have drawn very largely from that source in the preparation of Part I. And with much pleasure I acknowledge my indebtedness to this pioneer in describing the methods of conducting the business of banking. Aid has been derived from other sources. This has been acknowledged in various places, but additional mention may be properly made of several writers and sources of information. The more important sections of the Banker's common-place Book have been thoroughly revised and incorporated with other matter in Chapters VI. And VII and the essay entitled Suggestions to Young Cashiers on the Duties of their Profession, is given in the Appendix. Another portion of Chapter VII from pages 51 to 58, was written by George Walker, formerly Bank Commissioner of Massachusetts, and a banker of many years' experience, who has justly acquired the high reputation he enjoys as a financial writer on both sides of the Atlantic. Chapter XIV., on The Book keeper, has been prepared by S. R. Hopkins, who has happily joined an exceptionally valuable experience as an accountant in all its forms, private, corporate and municipal, with excellent facility for description. He has also prepared the last part of the work re lating to Trust Companies. The Chapter on Private Banking is from the pen of Eugene R. Leland, Of New York, formerly a banker in Wisconsin. Excerpt from Common-Place Book: Edited by His Son-in-Law, John Wood Warter Unexpected and accidental circumstances have entailed upon me the publication of the lamented Southey's Common-Place Book. Had it been committed to my hands in the first instance, I should probably have made an arrangement somewhat different: as it is, I carry out, as far as I am enabled to do, the arrangement which is detailed in the publisher's Prospectus. I am the Editor of the present volume, complete in itself, from p. 203; and those who are conversant in literary investigation will make allowance for such errors as may have escaped me. As far as my limited reading, and the resources of a private library, permitted, I have investigated doubtful passages, and have corrected imperfect references. Nothing but reverence for the honoured name of Southey would have induced me, with my clerical calls and studies, to have entered upon the work. The difficulty of carrying it out only, shows the wonderful stores, the accumulated learning, and the unlimited research, of the excellently single-hearted, the devout, and gifted Collector. Most truly may it be said of him, in the words of Stephen Hawes, in his "Pastime of Pleasure," speaking of Master Lidgate - "And who his bokes list to hear or see, In them he shall find Elocution With as good order as may be, Keeping full close the moralization Of the trouthe of his great intencion. Whose name is registered in remembraunce, For to endure by long continuance." The headings of such passages as are not bracketed are the lamented Collector's; for the rest (in the quaint words of old Fuller, in his Abel Redivivus) "my own meanness" is responsible. A Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Bloomberg Businessweek Book of the Year Why our banking system is broken—and what we must do to fix it New bank failures have been a rude awakening for everyone who believed that the banking industry was reformed after the Global Financial Crisis—and that we’d never again have to choose between massive bailouts and financial havoc. The Bankers’ New Clothes uncovers just how little things have changed—and why banks are still so dangerous. Writing in clear language that anyone can understand, Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig debunk the false and misleading claims of bankers, regulators, politicians, academics, and others who oppose effective reform, and they explain how the banking system can be made safer and healthier. Thoroughly updated for a world where bank failures have made a dramatic return, this acclaimed and important book now features a new preface and four new chapters that expose the shortcomings of current policies and reveal how the dominance of banking even presents dangers to the rule of law and democracy itself.
