The science and technology of remote sensing is introduced in terms of its history, concepts and language, and its application to the exploitation and management of marine fisheries. The physics of electromagnetic radiation is reviewed with reference to atmospheric and target interactions. Realizing the need for a material describing the application especially in fisheries sector, it was my fervid aspiration to develop a text book. The Worlds highest producer of fish and fishery products from capture fisheries are identified as major fishing areas by FAO. The countries within the Southeast Asian region considered as a major producer of capture fisheries. In 2019, the world’s fisheries production was amounted to 195.7 million metric tons (MT) of which, 94.6 million MT was from capture fisheries and 101.1 came from aquaculture. Southeast Asian region accounted for about 42.2 million MT that constitute around 22% of the total landing. Among them, Indonesia, the highest producer generated about 20.6 million MT. Considering this scenario, the effective management of the region’s inland and coastal areas is very essential to reinforce the trend of fisheries and aquaculture in geographical region and thereby can ensure food security of peoples within the whole world. There are existing technologies that would be used for better planning and management of fisheries and aquaculture, e.g. GIS and Remote Sensing technologies. The usage of those technologies is therefore worth exploring, especially in obtaining the required information for formulating appropriate approaches, policies, further as management plans for medium and long-term sustainable utilization of fishery resources and environmental facilities for fisheries and aquaculture.

The distribution and abundance of white marlin correlated with the chlorophyll, water temperature, and Secchi depth sea truth measurements. Results of correlation analyses for dolphin were inconclusive. Predication models for white marlin were developed using stepwise multiple regression and discriminant function analysis techniques which demonstrated a potential for increasing the probability of game fishing success. The S190A and B imagery was density sliced/color enhanced with white marlin location superimposed on the image, but no density/white marlin relationship could be established.

This summer school was a sequel to the summer school on Remote Sensing in Meteorology, Oceanography and Hydrology which was held in Dundee in 1980 and the proceedings of which were published by Ellis Horwood Ltd., Chichester, England. At the present summer scnool we concentrated on only part of the subject area that was covered in 1980. Although there was some repetit ion of material that was presented in 1980, because by and large we had a new set of participants, most subjects were treated in considerably greater detail than had been possible previously. The major topics covered in the present summer school were (i) the general principles of remote sensing with particular reference to marine applications, (ii) applications to physical oceanography, (iii) marine resources applications and (iv) coastal monitoring and protection. The material contained in this volume represents the written texts of most of the lectures presented at the summer school. One important set of lecture notes was not available; this was for the lectures on active microwave techniques, principally synthetic aperture radar, by W. Alpers from Hamburg. For this material we would refer the reader to "Imaging Ocean Surface Waves by Synthetic Aperture Radar - A Review" by W. Alpers,which is to appear as chapter 6 in "Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing" edited by T.D. Allan (Ellis Horwood, Chichester) which is to be published in 1983.
