DOWNLOAD EBOOK →The Student Engagement in America study seeks to use the pilot program "Student Engagement Tools" as a way to understand if entrepreneurial youth programs inspired by microcredit lending are effective. Rather than measuring business success or reduction in poverty, engagement, self-worth, self-efficacy and team work attitude levels were measured as these are characteristics of productive citizens. Data from the three measurement instruments--surveys, interviews and observations--was correlated to find if each provided comparable data for each variable. It was expected that: change in all four variables would be positive, the subject with the lowest starting levels would have the largest increase and the measurement instruments would have strong positive correlations. The data suggests that the subject with the lowest starting levels did have the biggest positive improvement, however not all overall changes were positive. Team work attitudes seemed to be most affected by how well the business did, perceived contribution to the business and participation in the community project. Parallels can be drawn between the lower variable levels at the end of the program and outside factors such as the program conducted during the spring semester leading to observed disengagement as the students got closer to summer vacation. The measurement instruments were mostly highly correlated except for a few variations with the interview instrument. This suggests the interview instrument--both the questions and variable coding should be reviewed and revised. The data analysis and inferences from the program execution were used to create a list of best practices for future "Student Engagement Tools" program implementation.
