DOWNLOAD EBOOK →A total of 455 mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits were subjected to impact at velocities ranging between 25 ft/sec and 51 ft/sec. The desired velocities were generated by allowing the animals to free-fall from various heights to a flat concrete pad. The ventral surface of each animal was the area of impact. Probit analyses of the 24-hr mortality data yielded LD50 impact velocities with 95 per cent confidence limits as follows: mouse, 39.4 (37.4-42. 0) ft/sec; rat, 43.5 (42.0 - 44.8) ft/sec; guinea pig, 31.0 (30.0 - 31.9) ft/ sec. The LD50 figures for the mouse and rat were significantly higher, statistically, than those for the guinea pig and rabbit. The small spread in the LD50 values suggested little variation in the tolerance of biological systems to impact. Further, the steepness of the mortality curves indicated a narrow survival range to impact. Extrapolation of the experimental data to the 70 kg animal yielded a predicted LD50 impact velocity of 26 ft/sec (18 mph). Literature relevant to the human case was reviewed and the tentative applicability of the predicted figures to adult man was discussed. (Author).

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →TBI occurs as a direct result of blast wave-induced changes in atmospheric pressure (primary blast injury), from objects put in motion by the blast hitting people (secondary blast injury), and by people being forcefully put in motion by the blast (tertiary blast injury) (Taber, 2006). The brain is clearly vulnerable to both secondary and tertiary blast injury. The most common types of TBI are diffused axonal injury, contusion, and subdural hemorrhage. In this report, efforts have been made to quantitatively study the effects of blast overpressure and blast-related impact on secondary and tertiary TBI. A series of nonlinear dynamic finite-element analyses have been performed on a human-head (H-head) finite-element model developed by ESI Group and a finite-element Hybrid-III dummy model by LSTC. Finite-element calculations were performed to validate the ESI H-head model against the 3D brain motion data of Hardy et al. (2001) and the intracranial pressure data of Nahum et al. (1977). Additionally, available blast loading approaches were discussed, specifically the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Parametric simulations involving primary, secondary, and tertiary blast injury were performed to evaluate the effect of standoff distance, impulse and fragment speed on the extent of damage to the brain, using cumulative strain damage measure as the injury metric.
