‘ON THE LINE’ is a detailed autobiography written by Eileen Edwards about her tennis officiating career, presented almost in diary format over four decades from 1972. Eileen tells of her initial interest in tennis when, in 1987, she joined the British Tennis Umpires Association (BTUA). This game, set and match narrative continues through until 2012 with the Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) as a top tennis official and having served as a member of the Committee of Management. Eileen wrote everything down with meticulous detail throughout her distinguished officiating career, reminiscing details of matches she officiated, including pro-celebrity tournaments and several conversations with officials, players, royalty, celebrities and her beloved, Cliff Richard. What you do find in this book is a very revealing account of the tennis officiating industry. You also get the distinct feeling that writing the book was actually cathartic for Eileen, putting her concerns to print and righting some wrongs with those within the industry. Her book reads like the history of British tennis over the last four decades, and it is a revealing account of the camaraderie, favouritism, in-fighting and back-biting within the tennis association. Sadly, Eileen’s exceptional and eventful career was tinged with bitterness and seems sad that her fantastic experiences and years of devotion to the tennis association would end in such a way. There are stories she tells that will shock you. However, with her three children, also as top tennis officials, there are plenty of amusing stories Eileen tells that will make you laugh and even the odd words with her and her children’s wonderful sense of humour and fun. This book is a really interesting read for any tennis aficionado.

Jonathan, King Sauls oldest son overheard the argument between his father and Samuel, the Prophet. The argument was fierce and tense. He had never seen Samuel so distraught. Samuel had just finished telling his father that he was no longer to be king of the country when Jonathan reached them. It must be a mistake, Jonathan thought. Samuel turned from Saul and ordered the two soldiers, Bring King Agag before me. In minutes, King Agag stood before them with a confidence that he would soon be free. He had been the only one spared from the attack of the city. Without hesitation Samuel turned and pulled the sword from King Sauls sheath and began to slay King Agag. After Samuel was through he returned the sword to Saul and stared intensely into Sauls face and said, It is done as God has commanded. The flesh of King Agag laid waste on the ground. The prophet began his journey back to his home and began to pray as he walked down the hill. His mind was racing with questions and concerns. Who would be the next king of Israel? Would he be able to lead the country? Israel was in a war with the Philistines, the Moabites, and other countries. Losing a king at this time could destroy their country. He loved King Saul. It was unfortunate that King Saul went his own path rather than the path that was chosen for him. Regardless, a new leader was needed. Let Gods will be done. He headed for his home and began to prepare himself for the selection of a new king.

David Francis is a man who left the small town of Stinfer and wanted one thing: to completely forget his previous life. Love was the last thing on his mind but not until he met a woman called Elizabeth. Elizabeths interest in Davids stories and her mere presence takes him back in time and reminds him of whom he was: a child who was forced to kill on his tenth birthday, a man who believed in seven gods, a man who believed in the three brothers myth, a deadly Casanova and, most of all a man who had a never ending taste for the human heart.
