Excerpt from The Old Manse and a Few Mosses Hawthorne, like most writers of the present day, was wont to send out his stories and sketches through the magazines of his time, and to collect them after ward into volumes. He gave the felicitous title, taken from Shakespeare, to one of these collections, of Twice Told Tales, and to another, of Mosses from an Old Manse. It was when he was living in the manse, or residence of the minister at Concord, Massachusetts, that he made this collection, and by a graceful turn gave a title to it which intimated how antique, for the most part, were the stories which he had been writing; how, like the moss, they gathered about the life of an old society. The collection consists of twenty-six tales, together with an introductory chapter, descriptive of the manse itself. Four of these have been selected, also introduced by the account of the old manse, which is one of the most characteristic of Hawthorne's play ful leisurely sketches. Excerpt from Mosses, Under the Pine, Seaweed; Tales at the Manse: A Revised Collection of the Poems This afternoon the autumn winds are silent, Which crept so chill along the Slope at morning, And looks to-day so bare the lonely orchard. At length has come the dreamy, sere October The daylight sleeps upon the noiseless upland, And soft the haze that fills the voiceless valley. A mile away, the river burns and glistens, Through yonder willow gleams the distant village A Shaft of fire above it flames the church-spire. The woodbine listless droops about the window Nor stirs the maple by the quiet doorway, And sheer against the Sky leans the still locust. Dark, weird, psychologically complex, Hawthorne’s short fiction continues to fascinate readers. Brenda Wineapple has made a generous selection of Hawthorne’s stories, including some of his best-known tales as well as other, less-often anthologized gems. In her introduction, she explores a writer whose best stories, as Wineapple has elsewhere observed, “penetrate the secret horrors of ordinary life, those interstices in the general routine where suddenly something or someone shifts out of place, changing everything.” The John Harvard Library edition reproduces the authoritative texts of Hawthorne’s stories in The Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
