Deng Xiaoping is by his own merit and by what is known in Chinese popular culture as the ''Divine Mandate'' or natural might, the Father of Modern and Economically Developed China. Although not an official title, the term Supreme Leader is applied to the Maximum Leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and of the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and is ultimately an informal term to refer to the most prominent political leader in China in each era. Deng Xiao Ping was never President of the People's Republic of China as many outsiders think, but rather his political leadership surpassed the presidents of his time, both during his term as Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (8 March 1978 - 17 June 1983), Chairman of the Central Military Commission (28 June 1981 - 9 November 1989), and Chairman of the Central Consultative Commission (13 September 1982 - 2 November 1987), respectively. The Central Advisory Commission (in (CAC) was an organ of the Communist Party of China during the era of Deng Xiaoping's supreme leadership, and was a select group of senior Party members, which in practice had more authority than the then Chinese President Li Xiannian's own executive, President of China from 1983 to 1988. The socio-political evolution and industrial development of the People's Republic of China after Mao Zedong (December 26, 1893 - September 9, 1976) was greatly influenced by the vision of a group of veteran leaders of the Communist Party of China - known as the Eight Elders or the Eight Immortals - of whom the leadership of Deng Xiao Ping stands out historically and politically. This book is a small glimpse into an era of transformation and political transition of the country that a few decades later has become the world's leading economy, and a feared and respected adversary in all nations. This is the Story of One of the Good Guys, Deng Xiao Ping. Deng Xiaoping's story and career is an example of all that can be achieved with tenacity, persistence, honesty and nationalism. To the outside world Deng Xiaoping represents a contradiction - he is both China's most successful moderniser, and the `Butcher of Beijing', China's supreme leader who must take responsibility for the events surrounding Tiananmen Square in June 1989. However, Deng the politition has no such contradiction: only the Chinese Communist Party can bring modernisation to China. For Deng any threat to the Communist Party is a threat to the project of China's modernisation. This book attempts to reach beyond the spectacular economic success of recent years to understand Deng's own particular role and the sources of his political power. Deng Xiaoping was involved with the communist movement before there was even a Communitst Party of China and his entire career has been shaped by both the party and the network of relationships and people within it. David Goodman explores the way in which Deng has survived being purged three times via his contacts with key politicians, Zhou Enlai in Paris in the early 1920s and Mao Zedong from 1933 to the early 1960s. His close relationship with the military from the Sino-Japanese War of 1937 through to the present day, has also enabled him to survive difficult political periods. Indeed, Deng's wartime experience, in the Taihang Mountains, plays a central but often overlooked role in his later career, particularly as a source of political support. David Goodman has been able to draw on the substantial documentary sources that have become available from China since 1989 as well as the analysis of Deng's political life that has proliferated inside the People's Republic in recent years. In addition, there is included a catalogue and analysis of the speeches and writings of Deng Xiaoping since 1938, that will prove to be an invaluable reference aid to his years of influence and power. The result is a balanced evaluation of Deng the politician that provides fresh insights into the career of one of the twentieth centuy's greatest political survivors.

This book examines the policy, ideology and politics of Xi Jinping, State President and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and China’s “ruler for life.” Through comparisons with former CCP leaders, including Deng Xiaoping, it assesses whether, having abandoned many of the key precepts of the Era of Reform and the Open Door, the conservative supreme leader’s restitution of Maoist standards might enable China to sustain economic growth and project hard and soft power worldwide. The book also examines whether the Communist Party will succeed in retaining the support of 1.4 billion Chinese in the face of unprecedented challenges in the economic and geopolitical arenas. It also provides a comprehensive picture of Xi’s rise to power; his AI-assisted and “legalistic” surveillance and control mechanisms; China’s evolving economic system; Xi’s foreign and national-security policies and the implications of the 20th Party Congress of October 2022 from both domestic and foreign perspectives. Being among the first books in English on the ambitious and multi-faceted agendas that Xi has laid out taking China up to the early 2040s, this will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Chinese studies, China-US relations, East Asian politics and Contemporary Asian history.
